Erling Haaland Scores Twice to Propel Manchester City in Champions League
Erling Haaland does not slow down. He just resets the bar.
On another European night, in another city, the Manchester City striker treated the Champions League like his private scoring range, striking twice in a 2-0 win at FC Porto to launch the holders’ league phase with a statement.
He scored in the 47th minute. He scored again in the 91st. Different ends of the half, same outcome: Haaland deciding the game.
Haaland joins Aguero in Europe’s record book
Those two goals did more than sink Porto. They pushed Haaland to 59 goals in 59 Champions League matches – a perfect one-per-game return in Europe’s elite competition.
Thirty-six of those have come in a Manchester City shirt. That number matters. It pulls him level with Sergio Aguero as the club’s all-time leading scorer in the UEFA Champions League.
Aguero needed a decade in Manchester to build that total. Haaland arrived in 2022 and has already caught him.
The comparison will only grow louder. Across all competitions for City, Haaland now sits on 167 goals in 203 appearances. Aguero’s final tally stands at 260. The gap is still sizeable, but the trajectory is obvious. If Haaland stays fit and stays put, the club’s greatest marksman record is in serious danger.
No rest, no mercy
There had been genuine debate before kick-off about whether Haaland might sit this one out. He came into the season off a heavy international load, having scored seven goals in five matches for Norway at the World Cup.
Enzo Maresca, mindful of the strain, had admitted the schedule was punishing.
“It’s not easy for Erling or for any of the players that play for club and international teams,” the Manchester City manager said before the game. “I think it is normal that you see these players start to be tired. So, it’s correct to give them some rest. It can be one game out or one week away.
“It depends on which moment we are in but the priority is to allow the players to be good and happy. When you see them tired the risk of injury increases, and we need players who are 100 percent.”
On this evidence, Haaland is still close enough to that mark to terrify defenders.
He came into Porto already riding a wave. Over the weekend he scored his 300th club goal, reaching that milestone faster than global superstars like Cristiano Ronaldo and Kylian Mbappe. The week before, he had helped himself to another brace. The opener in Portugal extended his scoring run to three straight matches; the stoppage-time second simply underlined his current mood.
When the chances fall to him right now, the argument is not whether he will score, but how often.
Derby on the horizon
City’s job in Porto was simple: start the Champions League league phase with three points and no drama. Haaland made sure of both. His brace killed the contest and settled any early-season murmurs about fatigue with the bluntest answer a striker can give.
Now comes a very different stage.
Next up is a derby against Manchester United on Sunday, Sept. 13. Different competition, different intensity, same expectation. City will walk into that game knowing exactly where their cutting edge lies.
United know it too.
The question is no longer whether anyone can stop Erling Haaland in Europe. It’s whether their greatest rivals in the league can do what Porto, and so many others, simply could not.
