Erling Haaland's Impressive World Cup Debut for Norway
Erling Haaland, one of the most feared strikers globally, marked his first World Cup appearance with a bang. On Tuesday, the Manchester City forward led Norway to a 4–1 victory over Iraq, scoring twice and helping secure Norway's first World Cup win in 28 years.
Before this tournament, Haaland had already scored 351 goals across club and international matches but had never played in a senior World Cup, since Norway missed out on the last six editions. "To qualify for the World Cup is a really special thing," he said ahead of the event. "I'm looking forward to it. It's going to be amazing. Finally." At 25 years old, he showcased the same striking prowess that once saw him net nine goals in a single U-20 World Cup match back in 2019.
Haaland vs. Iraq: A Dream Start
The game quickly revealed Haaland's dominance. Just six minutes in, he won a high ball against Iraq's defense and sprinted toward the goal line, though his pass to Alexander Sørloth was saved. After a quiet start, Haaland broke the deadlock in the 29th minute, finishing off a cross from David Møller Wolfe to give Norway the lead.
He then set up Sørloth with a neat move inside the box, though the striker failed to convert. Iraq equalized before halftime, but Haaland struck again four minutes later by capitalizing on a goalkeeper’s hesitant clearance, tapping the ball into the net for a first-half brace. His two goals came from just four shots, accompanied by a solid defensive effort in stoppage time.
Second Half: Less Impact, But Still Vital
Haaland's influence waned after the break as Iraq grew stronger and Norway struggled to control the game. Dropping deeper to link play, he lost effectiveness, misplacing several passes. Despite fading for long stretches, he nearly scored a third goal late in the match but was denied by a well-timed save.
Near the end of stoppage time, Haaland impressed with an incredible leap to head a cross back into the box, leading to Norway's fourth goal—later credited as an own goal by Iraq's Ayman Hussein. Two goals and a near assist crowned Haaland’s impressive debut, pushing Norway to the top of Group I.
Performance by the Numbers
Haaland led all players in shots and touches inside the opponent’s box. He has now scored on his debuts in the Bundesliga, Premier League, Champions League, and World Cup.
What’s Next for Norway and Haaland?
Norway’s next match is against Senegal on Monday at MetLife Stadium. Senegal will look to bounce back after losing to France, while Norway aims to secure their spot in the knockout stage with another win. The final group game against France on June 26 at Gillette Stadium could decide who tops Group I.
