Estevao Opens Up on World Cup Setback After Unexpected Return to Brazil Squad

Chelsea winger Estevao expressed deep gratitude after rejoining the Brazil squad for upcoming friendlies against Australia and India. The young forward shared his emotional journey overcoming a severe injury that kept him out of the 2026 World Cup.

Back in the Selecao Under Ancelotti's Direction

The 19-year-old Chelsea attacker celebrated his return at a press event in Brisbane, where he was named by Carlo Ancelotti in the squad for the FIFA Super Date fixtures. Brazil will face Australia twice and then take on India during this international window.

This call-up is Estevao’s first since sustaining a serious right hamstring tear while playing for Chelsea in April 2026. Although treated conservatively at Palmeiras, the injury ruled him out of the World Cup.

Resilience Fueled by Family and Faith

Estevao spoke openly about the challenge of watching the World Cup from the sidelines. He credited his family’s support and his faith for helping him stay mentally strong throughout recovery.

“My family was fundamental to me during this injury period, which isn’t easy for an athlete,” Estevao said. “We missed a very special moment, but they were always by my side. I also used a lot of the word resilience, facing each day, forgetting what happened and focusing on the future.”

Inspired by Ancelotti's Trust

Before injury struck, Estevao had an impressive start internationally under Ancelotti, scoring against Chile, South Korea, Senegal, and Tunisia. He looks forward to regaining a key role alongside Rodrygo and Vinicius Junior without feeling pressure.

“I don’t think it’s anxiety, I think it’s a privilege,” Estevao said. “Every player chosen here is privileged. Being chosen by Ancelotti motivates me to give my best every day in training and games.”

Upcoming Fixtures and Ambitions

Brazil’s tour begins against Australia on Friday at Queensland Country Bank Stadium in Townsville. They meet the Socceroos again on September 29 at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium. Their final match is against India on October 3 at Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata.
