Evan Ferguson's Recovery Progress at Brighton
Evan Ferguson is edging his way back. Not there yet, but close enough for Brighton to start dreaming again.
The Republic of Ireland striker has been out since an ankle injury wrecked the back end of last season and cut short his loan spell at Roma, where he hit five goals in 22 games and hinted at something bigger brewing in Serie A. Surgery in March fixed the damage. The recovery has taken care of the rest – slowly.
Brighton have already lived both sides of the Premier League coin this season: a 4-0 dismantling of Aston Villa, then a wild 4-3 defeat at Chelsea. Through it all, Ferguson has been missing, working away from the spotlight while Fabian Hurzeler tries to build a side that can score freely without one of its most natural finishers.
Speaking before Leeds United visit the Amex on Saturday, Hurzeler confirmed what Brighton supporters most wanted to hear – progress, but patience.
“He’s getting closer,” the manager said. “He’s in his rehab. I can’t give a clear timescale for when he will be back.”
The original hope inside the club was that early October might be realistic. That marker has now blurred. No firm date, no ringed calendar. Just the steady grind of rehab and the memory of what Ferguson once brought to this team.
“Everyone knows what Evan is capable of doing,” Hurzeler said. “He proved it a few years ago here at Brighton. I think he was one of the best strikers in the Premier League, so hopefully he can get back on track.”
That is not empty praise. Three years ago, the Meath-born forward became the first teenager since Wayne Rooney to hit 10 Premier League goals in a calendar year. It felt like the start of something unstoppable. Instead, injuries kept arriving, stalling a career that had taken off at frightening speed.
Hurzeler, though, is looking beyond the ankle and into the space between Ferguson’s ears.
“Hopefully he gets his mind in the right position,” he said. “I think that’s the key after these kinds of injuries, that you get back on track and have complete trust in your own body.
“Only if you feel really safe and trust your own body are you capable of playing at the highest level. That’s the main focus now, and then let’s see what happens.”
Brighton know what a fully fit, fully confident Evan Ferguson looks like. The real question is how soon the Premier League will see that version again – and what it might mean for a season that already feels wide open.
