Fenerbahce Makes €50m Offer for Rafael Leao from Milan
The noise around Rafael Leao’s future has never really gone away at Milan. Now it has a concrete figure, a contract length and a club willing to push hard to test the Rossoneri’s resolve.
According to Italian daily Gazzetta dello Sport, Fenerbahce have put a five-year offer on the table for the Portuguese winger worth a net €8 million per season, plus a hefty package of performance bonuses. It is the kind of proposal that forces a decision.
A blockbuster offer from Istanbul
Fenerbahce’s proposal is clear and aggressive. A net salary of €8m a year over five seasons, with three annual bonuses built in:
- €1.5m if Leao makes more than 20 appearances,
- €1.5m if he hits 15 goals,
- €1m if Fenerbahce win the Süper Lig title.
On top of that comes a transfer fee of €50m, the figure Gazzetta reports Fenerbahce are ready to pay Milan to open the door.
For a player who scored 10 goals and added three assists in 31 competitive appearances last season, it is a statement of belief in his ceiling rather than a simple reward for recent numbers. It is also a declaration of intent from a club tired of watching someone else lift the trophy.
Fenerbahce’s title obsession
Fenerbahce have finished runners-up in each of the last four seasons and have not won the Süper Lig since 2014. That drought hangs over everything. Under newly elected president Aziz Yildirim, the club have moved into an aggressive rebuilding phase designed to close the gap on champions Galatasaray, and then rip past them.
The spending has already been heavy. Mason Greenwood arrived from Olympique Marseille only weeks ago in a €39m deal that set a new club record. That record now stands on the verge of being broken again if the Leao deal advances.
The recruitment drive does not stop there. Vedat Muriqi has come in from Mallorca for €15.5m, and Nathan Ake has been signed from Manchester City for €8m. Fenerbahce are not quietly tweaking a squad; they are trying to reshape the balance of power in Turkish football in a single summer.
Landing Leao would be the clearest symbol yet of that ambition.
Milan’s dilemma and the Karetsas plan
At Milan, Leao has long been a lightning rod. His talent is obvious, his inconsistency just as familiar. For years he has divided opinion at San Siro, thrilling in flashes, frustrating in others. A move to the Süper Lig would give him a clean slate and a substantial pay rise, while still keeping him on a major European stage.
For Milan, the equation is more complex. If they decide to cash in, the plan, according to the same report, is to reinvest heavily in Konstantinos Karetsas of KRC Genk. The Greek attacker is viewed as a key target for the next phase of their rebuild.
There is a hitch. Karetsas has reportedly already given his word to Borussia Dortmund. BVB have moved earlier and, unlike Milan, are said to have already put an offer on the table. Milan, for now, are still on the outside looking in.
So the Rossoneri face a double race: to decide whether to accept a huge offer for Leao, and, if they do, to ensure the money can be turned quickly into a cornerstone signing rather than a missed opportunity.
A turning point for player and club
Leao’s numbers last season will not silence his critics, but they also do not tell the full story of his influence on Milan’s attack. What Fenerbahce are really paying for is the possibility that, in a different environment and with a team built to unleash him, he becomes the consistent match-winner he has only shown in bursts in Serie A.
For Fenerbahce, the question is simple: is this the move that finally ends a decade-long wait for the title and flips the balance of power back in Istanbul?
For Milan, it is harsher: can they afford to let a player of Leao’s profile leave, and can they afford not to if €50m is on the table and their own rebuild demands ruthless decisions?
