Fernandes vs Haaland: Best Captaincy Choice for Gameweek 2

Erling Haaland (£15.5m) will dominate the armbands again in Gameweek 2. He always does. But the numbers – and the fixtures – are screaming for a different answer this week.

Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m) at Old Trafford against promoted Ipswich Town is the standout alternative, and on current evidence, the smarter bet.

Home king v away machine

The contrast is clear.

Haaland heads to Crystal Palace on Friday night, the first fixture of the Gameweek. He was the top-scoring player in away matches in 2025/26. That reputation alone will keep him as the most popular captain.

Yet Fernandes was even more ruthless in his own domain.

The Manchester United playmaker finished last season as the top-scoring player in home matches. Across 17 home appearances in 2025/26, he delivered:

  • 7.3 points per start
  • 17 combined goals and assists
  • Eight double-digit hauls
  • Only three blanks

Haaland’s away record, while still elite, falls short in key areas:

  • 6.6 points per start
  • 16 combined goals and assists in 18 away games
  • Four double-digit returns
  • Seven blanks on the road

Fernandes offered double the number of big home hauls and blanked less than half as often. For a captain, that reliability matters as much as the explosive upside.

GW1 frustration, GW2 opportunity

Gameweek 1 underlined the risk of following the crowd.

Haaland was captained by a massive 4.38 million managers, dwarfing Fernandes’ 1.48 million. Ownership told a similar story: 67.9 per cent for the Norwegian, 48.5 per cent for the Portuguese.

Both returned just two points.

No goals, no assists, no bonus. A flat start from the two most-backed assets in the game. But that stalemate between them only sharpens the Gameweek 2 decision: stick with the safety of Haaland’s ownership, or attack the upside with Fernandes’ home dominance and kinder fixture.

Ipswich at Old Trafford offers exactly the kind of platform Fernandes has punished repeatedly. On last season’s evidence, he is more likely to return, more likely to haul, and less likely to disappear.

The chasing pack: Odegaard, Palmer, Joao Pedro

Haaland and Fernandes blanked. Others did not wait around.

Martin Odegaard (£6.6m), Cole Palmer (£9.5m) and Joao Pedro (£7.6m) all exploded out of the blocks with double-figure returns in Gameweek 1.

Odegaard operated in Arsenal’s most advanced central role behind Kai Havertz (£7.0m), scored, and walked away with 11 points against Coventry City. He now travels to an Aston Villa side still reeling from a 4-0 defeat by Brighton & Hove Albion. If that Villa defence stays as open, Odegaard’s late runs and set-piece threat could punish them again.

Palmer and Joao Pedro did their damage together for Chelsea, each producing a goal and an assist away to Fulham in their opening match of 2026/27. Both now return to Stamford Bridge for a home clash with Brighton, a fixture that promises space and chances if Chelsea maintain their attacking tempo.

Like Fernandes, Palmer and Joao Pedro have the advantage of playing in front of their own fans. For managers looking to roll the dice against Haaland’s effective ownership shield, these three are the leading names.

So, who gets the armband?

Strip away the fear of going against Haaland and the answer becomes clearer.

Fernandes’ Old Trafford record is too strong to ignore, and Ipswich at home is exactly the sort of fixture where his volume of shots, set-pieces and penalties tend to translate into big Fantasy returns. On form, on data and on fixture, he has to be backed to outscore Haaland in Gameweek 2.

Behind him, Odegaard and Palmer stand out as powerful differentials. The strength of Odegaard’s role and Aston Villa’s defensive collapse just about nudges the Arsenal captain ahead in the race for third-best option.

Haaland will still carry the most armbands. But Gameweek 2 offers a clear opening: follow the crowd to Palace, or trust Fernandes’ home fortress against Ipswich and go hunting for a real rank climb.
