Francesco Totti Reveals Offers from Top European Clubs at Age 48

It sounds unbelievable, but Francesco Totti, the 2006 World Cup winner, confirmed he received offers from Serie A clubs when he was 48 years old. Despite retiring in 2017, some teams reached out to him in October 2024, showing interest in a comeback.

Offers from Genoa and Como

Totti disclosed that both Genoa and Como made inquiries, but he declined them. Genoa’s coach was Alberto Gilardino, also a 2006 World Cup champion with Italy, and Como had Cesc Fàbregas on the bench. At that time, Gilardino was 42 and Fàbregas 37, meaning Totti would have been older than his coaches and teammates directing him on the field.

“These are not fairy tales, this is the plain truth. Incredible, but true. Crazy,” Totti shared in his autobiography Oltre, quoted by Corriere della Sera.

Training and Tough Choices

Genoa initiated contact first, and Totti spoke directly with the decision-makers who were serious about signing him. He took his time deciding, resumed training, and improved his diet by cutting out bread, sweets, and other indulgences—something he admitted was very difficult.

Physically, he felt capable, noting only normal aches typical for someone close to 50. Mentally, though, it was a tug-of-war. Sometimes his mind urged him to accept, while his heart resisted, then the feelings switched. Ultimately, his main concern was whether he could play for any team other than Roma.

Love for Roma Overcame Comeback Temptation

It wasn’t his age that stopped him; it was loyalty. Roma was the deciding factor, not an obstacle. “Sporting betrayal knows no age, whether you are 18 or 48,” Totti explained, revealing why he turned down the Serie A clubs despite the unusual opportunity.
