Francesco Totti Credits Himself for Italy’s 2006 World Cup Victory

Francesco Totti, the iconic Roma figure, playfully claimed that Italy would not have secured the 2006 World Cup without his key role and tournament-leading four assists. Reflecting on his impact, Totti highlighted how the victory boosted his reputation beyond Rome.

Totti’s Reflection on His Career Peak and Leadership

The 50th birthday interview with Corriere dello Sport saw Totti dive into his memories of the World Cup in Germany. He insisted that winning the trophy shifted his image from just a Roman legend to an internationally recognized star.

“If I hadn’t played, they wouldn’t have won it,” Totti joked. “That World Cup gave me the strength to be important outside Rome too. If I had only won one Scudetto, two Coppa Italias and two Supercoppas, I would have stayed ‘inside the ring road’. Instead, I won it and, even though I was at 40 percent, I made a big contribution. Not everyone wins a World Cup.”

Playing Through Injury

Totti’s mention of performing at just 40 percent fitness wasn’t an exaggeration. Earlier in 2006, he suffered a fractured left ankle that required urgent surgery, forcing him to rush back to fitness before the tournament began.

Despite this setback, he started six out of seven matches for Italy, scoring once and assisting four times—the highest assist tally of the competition. Totti described this period as his prime years between 2001 and 2008, saying, “I was ‘embarrassing’ for how strong I felt.”

Quiet Leadership on the Field

Though praised for his skill, Totti often faced criticism for not being vocal in the locker room. When asked about this, he acknowledged the critique without dispute.

“I’ve always been of the view that the pitch was what counted,” he said. “Outside it, everyone is good at talking. They would say to me: why don’t you say something to the team before the game? But I have to go and play football, I have to enjoy myself. I never felt tension before a match.”
