From teenage prodigy to stalled project
Reyna arrived in Germany in 2019, leaving New York City FC’s academy to join Borussia Dortmund with all the fanfare that follows a prodigy. For a time, the hype felt justified. His touch, his vision, the way he drifted between the lines – he looked built for the Bundesliga spotlight.

Gladbach’s head of sports, Rouven Schröder, captured the frustration neatly: Gio is an excellent player, he insisted, but one who only showed glimpses of his potential and never managed a consistent run, again held back by injuries.
A new stage, same expectations
The numbers from his time in Germany tell a more generous story than the recent narrative. Across his spells at Dortmund and Gladbach, Reyna made 125 Bundesliga appearances, scoring 16 goals and adding 13 assists. For a player still only 23, that is a substantial body of work in one of Europe’s top leagues.
And while his club career has stalled, his standing with the USMNT has not. Reyna remains a central figure for the USA, already capped 43 times. He featured in all five of his country’s matches at the FIFA World Cup 2026, and his outside-of-the-boot strike against Paraguay was the kind of moment that reminds everyone why coaches keep believing, why fans keep waiting for the full version of Gio Reyna to arrive and stay.
That is what Strasbourg are buying: not just a résumé, but a reclamation project with a very high ceiling. A player who has lived the pressure of Dortmund, tasted the Premier League with Forest, felt the scrutiny that comes with being a national-team linchpin before his mid‑20s.
The setting changes now. The questions do not. Can he finally stay fit? Can he turn those isolated flashes into a season, then a career, of sustained influence?
