Grand Canyon's Struggles in Pacific Northwest Opener
MOSCOW, Idaho – One mistake on the turf was all it took to derail Grand Canyon’s Pacific Northwest opener.
Inside the Kibbie Dome, a matchup billed as a clash of inventive attacks turned into a grind. Ninety minutes, one goal, and a long, frustrating night for the Lopes.
Early error, lasting damage
The decisive moment arrived almost before the game had settled.
In the 6th minute, Idaho forward Calli Chiarelli pounced on the kind of chance strikers replay in their heads for years. GCU goalkeeper Emma Knack mis-hit a clearance, sending the ball straight to the senior. Chiarelli took a couple of calm touches, stared down an exposed goal and drilled her shot home for a 1-0 Vandals lead.
Idaho never needed a second.
Lopes locked out
From there, Grand Canyon chased the game without ever truly troubling the home side.
The Lopes failed to record a single shot on target, only the second time that’s happened under head coach Derek Cissell, a span that stretches back to the program’s first NCAA Tournament appearance at No. 3 USC. For a team that has shown it can score in a variety of ways, the attacking silence on the Kibbie Dome turf was stark.
Idaho’s back line and goalkeeper Paula Flores shut down lanes, cut off service, and turned the match into a series of dead ends for GCU’s forwards. Flores finished with her 22nd career shutout, another clean sheet in what has become a standout career.
Defense steadies, but can’t rescue result
After the early miscue, GCU’s defense responded with resolve.
The Lopes tightened their shape, limited Idaho’s looks and kept the game within reach. Knack recovered to handle the remaining three shots on frame, denying the Vandals any chance to turn the night into a rout. The back line did enough to give the attack a platform.
It just never came.
Idaho, now 5-1-1, stretched its winning run to three matches and claimed its first victory over Grand Canyon after losing in Phoenix last season.
Road ahead for GCU
Grand Canyon drops to 3-2-2, its three-match unbeaten streak snapped on a night when one early lapse overshadowed an otherwise solid defensive effort.
The schedule offers no time to dwell. On Sunday in Cheney, the Lopes face an Eastern Washington side that opened the year with five straight wins before finally slipping against Wyoming. The Eagles will be rested. They will be eager.
GCU will at least return to a grass surface and a more familiar feel. One game to reset the attack, reclaim momentum, and step into an upcoming three-match home stand – and the start of conference play – with something more than regret from a single, costly mistake in Moscow.
