Haaland Fit for Community Shield Clash Against Arsenal
Erling Haaland has been passed fit to face Arsenal in the Community Shield – but that doesn’t guarantee he starts.
The Manchester City striker briefly alarmed supporters when he sat out the final stages of Thursday’s open training session, sparking instant debate over his availability for the season’s curtain-raiser in Cardiff. Any doubts were quickly shut down by Enzo Maresca.
“He was ok, he had just a small thing behind ears, but he was ok,” the City head coach said on Friday, underlining that his star forward is available for selection.
Haaland fit, but rusty
Haaland punished Arsenal last season, scoring twice in three meetings, and his presence instantly tilts any contest. The issue this time is rhythm, not fitness.
The Norway international did not feature at all in pre-season, handed an extended break after helping his country reach the World Cup quarter-finals. Match sharpness is missing, and Maresca knows it.
So while Haaland is ready, he may have to watch the opening exchanges from the bench.
Omar Marmoush has built a strong case to lead the line, hitting a brace in the 3-1 friendly win over Atletico Madrid and carrying the kind of form managers find hard to ignore. Dropping an in-form striker purely on reputation would be a bold call.
Midfield reshuffle as Reijnders exits
Behind the front line, Maresca has a problem of a different kind: replacing Tijjani Reijnders.
The Dutchman’s move to Saudi Pro League side Al Qadsiah is expected to be completed before the Arsenal clash, leaving a vacancy alongside Mateo Kovacic in central midfield.
Rico Lewis is in contention after starting there in the win over K-League Allstars, offering control and tactical flexibility. The big-money option is Elliot Anderson. The £116million summer signing could make his Manchester City debut in Cardiff, but the timing is tight. He has only just returned to training, as have Marc Guehi and Rayan Cherki, which hands an advantage to the fitter Nico Gonzalez.
Right now, Gonzalez looks the likeliest to get the nod.
Rodri has rejoined the squad after minor back surgery, a crucial step for City’s season, but he remains in the rehabilitation phase. This game should come too soon, and Maresca is not expected to risk him in what is, ultimately, a showpiece rather than a must-win league fixture.
Defensive battles and a rising left-back
At the back, one pre-season performer has forced his way into the conversation.
Rayan Ait-Nouri has impressed across the summer schedule and is now pushing hard for a start at left-back. If Maresca rewards that form, it would likely trigger a reshuffle in the centre, with Josko Gvardiol sliding inside to partner Ruben Dias at the heart of the defence.
It would be a subtle tweak on paper, but a clear signal: pre-season displays matter, and reputations alone do not guarantee places.
So City head into the Community Shield with their main striker fit, their midfield in flux, and their defence edging towards a new balance. For Maresca, this is more than a trophy shot – it’s the first real look at what his Manchester City might become.
