Halle Engle Leads Liberty to Victory Over JMU
LYNCHBURG, Va. – Liberty had to wait. Then Halle Engle made the wait worth it.
With the match grinding toward another stalemate between two familiar foes, Engle struck in the 82nd minute to lift Liberty to a 1-0 win over James Madison on Thursday night at Osborne Stadium, keeping the Lady Flames perfect at home and handing them a bruising, hard-earned non-conference victory.
Engle Breaks the Deadlock
For 80 minutes, the game looked destined to follow the script of recent meetings: tight, tense, and ultimately level. The last two clashes had ended in draws, and even Liberty’s overtime win in 2019 had needed extra time to find a winner.
This time, Engle refused to let it drift that far.
Running in stride with the JMU back line, Engle timed her move as fellow forward Margaret Garner picked her out. Garner slipped a pass into space, threading the ball ahead of Engle’s run. The senior forward beat the charging goalkeeper to it and tucked home what would stand as the decisive goal.
JMU immediately protested, arms raised, appealing for offside. The officials went to video review. The crowd waited. The call stood. So did Liberty’s lead.
It was Engle’s 11th career game-winner and her third of the season, pushing her to the top of the team’s scoring chart with three goals.
Leja Slams the Door
If Engle delivered the headline moment, Ainsley Leja quietly built the platform for it.
Liberty entered the night missing a key anchor in the back, with center back Lauren Littleton out and Dani Gubbels making the first start of her career. JMU sensed the opportunity and leaned into a physical, direct approach, edging the first half in shots, 7-5, and matching Liberty with three shots on frame.
Leja answered everything.
The senior goalkeeper posted a season-high-tying six saves, several of them in heavy traffic, to record her third full 90-minute shutout of the year. She now owns 24 career shutouts and improves her season numbers to a 0.80 goals-against average and a .806 save percentage.
Once Engle scored, Leja and the back line slammed the door. JMU managed only a single shot in the final eight minutes as Liberty calmly managed the clock and saw out the result.
Home Fortress, Growing Resume
The win pushes Liberty to 6-2-1 on the season and a perfect 4-0 at Osborne Stadium. It also nudges a once-lopsided series in a more competitive direction: the Lady Flames are now 4-8-2 all-time against JMU and 3-2-2 in the last seven meetings.
This was Liberty’s fifth shutout of the campaign and its second 1-0 win, joining a narrow victory over VCU. Five Lady Flames went the full 90 minutes in a match that demanded concentration and toughness from start to finish.
Engle’s goal gives her six total points this season, matching Garner and Avenly Monteith, who each sit on two goals and two assists. Garner added another decisive contribution with her assist on the winner, underlining the balance in Liberty’s attack.
Senior Day and One More Test
The non-conference slate now comes down to one last home date.
Liberty hosts Old Dominion (2-4) on Sunday afternoon, closing out non-conference play and staging a pre-game ceremony to honor 11 members of its 2026 Senior Class. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Osborne Stadium, with the Lady Flames looking to keep their home record spotless and carry this shutout steel into the heart of the season.
