Now, with Gavi and Gabriel Jesus back, even that status is under threat. If Balde is the one to drop out, it will not be about attitude or concentration. It will be about numbers, roles, and the cold logic of a 23-man limit.

Farinas in the firing line too

Brian Farinas also sits squarely in the discussion. His place is not guaranteed, and he is part of the group Flick must evaluate line by line before settling on the final call.

The coach has to weigh balance, positions, and possible game scenarios at Mestalla. Does he prioritise defensive cover? An extra midfielder? Another attacking option from the bench? Each answer nudges someone closer to the stands.

For the first time this season, Flick’s problem is a luxury one. But for Balde, for Farinas, and for at least one Barcelona player waiting for that list to drop, it will feel anything but luxurious.
