Hansi Flick's First Big Rotation Call at Barcelona
Hansi Flick stands on the brink of his first big rotation call of the season, and nowhere is the pressure heavier than at Barcelona. Valencia are coming, Feyenoord wait in midweek, and the German coach is juggling a squad bursting with options and egos.
Doubts over Yamal, doubts everywhere else
Lamine Yamal is the first major question. The teenager trained in the gym after taking a knock and remains a doubt for the Valencia clash. In central defence, Christensen forced his way into the team twice, against Elche and Rayo, despite not even appearing on the initial nomination lists. He muscled in on the line-up, then suddenly finds himself on the verge of dropping out.
On the left, Espart has done the opposite. A natural right-back, he has nailed down the left-back role, edging out Cancelo from a position many assumed was his by right. It is one of the clearest signs that Flick will pick on form and function, not on name.
The expected back four, for now, reads: Eric Garcia, Cubarsi, Gerard Martin and Espart in front of Joan Garcia.
Midfield fire: too many starters, not enough spots
If the defence is a puzzle, midfield is a furnace.
Pedri, Gavi, Dani Olmo, Fermin Lopez, Marc Bernal, Rodri and Bryan Farinas all have a case to start. Every one of them carries the numbers and the performances to demand minutes against Valencia.
Flick has been toying with the idea of pushing Rodri into the XI. The thought is still alive, but the schedule complicates everything. With Feyenoord in mind, he may lean towards a trio built on control and balance: Bernal, Pedri and Fermin Lopez.
Gavi brings intensity and character, a player who changes the rhythm of a match with his aggression. Olmo offers subtlety between the lines, the kind of quality that breaks defensive structures. Fermin is the runner, the late arrival into the box who turns moves into goals.
Between Olmo and Fermin, the playmaker role has rotated. Now it looks like Fermin’s turn again. The shift is small on paper, but on the pitch it changes how Barcelona attack the final third.
A front line on edge
Up front, the fight is just as ruthless.
Yamal and Raphinha have started every match so far, Yamal often operating as a forward and Raphinha as a more orthodox wide threat. That streak is now under threat because of Yamal’s knock.
Gabriel Jesus adds experience and a different profile in the final third, but he has only just arrived. Flick has used him carefully, aware that rhythm and understanding take time.
Adeyemi and Gordon have been sharing starts, trading roles on the wings as the coach experiments with pace, width and pressing angles. If Yamal drops out as expected, both Adeyemi and Gordon are set to feature from the flanks, with Raphinha completing the attacking trident.
It leaves Barcelona with a front line that looks aggressive, direct and built for transition rather than slow, patient probing.
