Harry Kane Considers NFL Future Alongside MLS Career

Harry Kane, Bayern Munich striker and England captain, opened up about his plans beyond football ahead of the UEFA Nations League match against Spain. He suggested that moving to the MLS might lead to a second career as an NFL placekicker within five to six years.

Kane Envisions Life After Bayern Peak

At 33, fresh off scoring 73 goals for Bayern Munich, Kane is among the favorites for the 2026 Ballon d'Or. Despite talks of extending his contract in Munich, he shared with reporters at St George's Park that his future could include playing in the MLS and possibly switching to the NFL as a kicker later on.

The Soccer-to-Football Transition Is Not New

Kane believes the skills used in penalty-taking in football align closely with those needed for NFL placekicking. He highlighted Brandon Aubrey, a Dallas Cowboys kicker who was once drafted in the MLS, as evidence that such a transition can work. Kane also referenced former Tottenham forward Clive Allen, who played for the London Monarchs in NFL Europe, as an earlier example.

Kane's own precision in finishing and penalty taking for Tottenham, Bayern, and England, combined with his admiration for Tom Brady, adds credibility to his plan.

Kane Talks Realistic NFL Prospects

"Maybe if I am in the MLS in the future or somewhere like that it might be a thing where you could connect the two maybe with the seasons," Kane said. "That is something I will try and look at a bit more seriously. It all depends on what happens in my career over the next five or six years, the motivation and what I want to do. The NFL is a lot more realistic than the golf one, let's put it that way."

He also mentioned that penalty kicks involve similar pressure and technique to NFL kicking. If he were to pursue it, he'd dedicate six months to a year to training.

For Now, Bayern and Spain Take Priority

Kane emphasized that this remains a distant goal while he's performing well in Europe. "If people know I am still on the top of my game here with football, it is not a conversation that would be had," he noted. Having first mentioned a potential NFL career about five years ago, the idea is gaining more shape now, especially with MLS being a viable late-career option.
