Hartlepool United Faces Double Injury Blow with Merrick and Kouogun Out
Hartlepool United have been dealt a brutal double injury setback, with goalkeeper Max Merrick ruled out for six weeks and defender Max Kouogun facing the prospect of ankle surgery.
The news comes just as Pools were starting to build some momentum.
Merrick blow after bright start
Merrick, on loan from Chelsea, lasted barely half an hour of Saturday’s 1-0 win over Woking before pulling up with a thigh problem and being forced off. He has since returned to his parent club for treatment and scans have confirmed a tear.
“Hartlepool boss Kevin Clark told BBC Radio Tees that the diagnosis was “not good news, but probably what we expected,” confirming the 21-year-old will be sidelined for around six weeks.
Chelsea’s medical department will now take charge of Merrick’s rehab. Clark stressed the benefits of that arrangement, pointing to the “top elite European club” facilities and extensive medical staff at Cobham. Hartlepool are in daily contact with the keeper and expect him back in the North East once he is close to a return to training.
In the short term, though, it leaves a sizeable hole.
Kouogun facing months out
If Merrick’s absence is a problem, Kouogun’s situation cuts even deeper.
The defender damaged his ankle ligaments after landing awkwardly in the defeat to Eastleigh in August. Scans have now confirmed ligament damage, and Clark admitted the centre-back will be missing for “a minimum of two months.”
The club will send Kouogun to see a consultant to decide whether surgery is required. If an operation is needed, the lay-off could stretch to around three months.
Clark did not hide his frustration, calling it “a big blow for us because Max is a big player for us in every sense of the word.”
Fisher steps up, decisions to make
Merrick’s injury opened the door for summer signing Nathan Fisher, who came on against Woking and is now expected to start Friday night’s fixture against Kidderminster Harriers (19:45 BST).
That reshuffle would push player/goalkeeping coach Adam Smith into the role of backup keeper.
Behind the scenes, Clark will speak with head of football operations Chris Maxwell, of club advisors Bromby & Partners, to assess whether Hartlepool can bring in short-term cover while Merrick recovers.
