That weekend featured 10 games with seven draws and no wins at home. This season, five away sides had already won by Monday, with four games drawn.
Historically, this has happened only three times since the Premier League began in 1992, including once in December 1996 and another during Boxing Day 1994 when the league had 22 teams.
Leeds Triumphs Over Newcastle 4-1
Leeds finally gave home teams a win this week with a strong 4-1 victory over Newcastle. They led 3-0 by halftime. Although Ao Tanaka's opening goal was lucky, deflecting off defenders past Newcastle’s goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek, Leeds deserved their lead.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin seemed to score first with a header from James Justin's cross, but it deflected off Jayden Bogle, who earned his second goal of the season. Calvert-Lewin then calmly finished to extend the lead before halftime, marking his fifth straight home game scoring streak at Elland Road — a feat last matched by Mark Viduka in 2003.

"At Premier League level, you always have to be 100% prepared," said Daniel Farke, Leeds' manager. "You can’t rely on just being at home to get results. Today’s win shows you must be at your very best."
This season, after 40 matches, home and away wins stand equal at 13 each. Although the sample is small, historical data shows that four of the five seasons with the highest away win percentages happened since 2010. The 2020-21 season holds the record with a 40% away win rate, played mostly without fans due to the pandemic. Crowds still matter but seem less decisive.
Balancing Atmosphere and Modern Upgrades at Elland Road
Leeds is investing in upgrades at Elland Road, adding executive boxes and renovating stands. This creates a challenge between welcoming wealthier guests and preserving the vibrant atmosphere that energized the stadium Monday. From the opening corner, Elland Road felt like a fortress, unlike Newcastle’s recent experience at Tottenham's modern stadium where they won 2-0 comfortably.
Young Newcastle midfielder Sean Steur struggled after coming on following a concussion to Nico Gonzalez, overwhelmed by the hostile environment and physicality unique to this league now.

Goalkeeper James Trafford took some risks under pressure but contributed to a dominant display. Such risk-taking can pay off, yet if Newcastle had scored first, the game might have turned completely.
