Hugo Ekitike's Journey Back from Achilles Injury

Hugo Ekitike has offered a fresh glimpse into his long road back from a serious Achilles injury, as Liverpool continue to wait on the return of one of their key attacking investments.

The 24-year-old striker ruptured his Achilles tendon in April, a brutal end to a debut season at Anfield that had promised so much. Signed from Eintracht Frankfurt 12 months ago in a deal worth up to £79million, Ekitike hit 17 goals before his campaign was cut short, abruptly halting his momentum just as he was settling into life on Merseyside.

The surgery that followed was successful and marked only the start of a demanding rehabilitation. Months on, the France international is still working his way back, but the latest signs are at least encouraging.

Clairefontaine grind for Liverpool’s No 9

Ekitike has been putting in the hard yards at the famed Centre Medical de Clairefontaine, the elite facility used by France’s men’s and women’s national teams. The centre posted several photos of the Liverpool forward in the gym and on the training equipment, focused on rebuilding strength and mobility after the tendon rupture.

The post, shared and liked by Ekitike on his Instagram story, read: "At Clairefontaine, there is the Chateau for national team call-ups... and the Medical Centre for their rehabilitation. Thank you to our Bleus* and Bleues for their trust."

For Liverpool supporters, those images are a rare public window into a recovery that has largely taken place away from the spotlight. The club know they will need patience. So does the player.

Iraola’s warning: ‘We are talking about months’

New Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola has been careful not to raise expectations over a quick comeback. Speaking in pre-season, he grouped Ekitike with two other long-term absentees, Giovanni Leoni and Conor Bradley, and underlined the scale of the task ahead.

"In terms of order, I think the closest one to returning is [Giovanni] Leoni," Iraola said in July. "After will be Conor [Bradley] and Hugo [Ekitike], but especially the last two are still way off. We are talking about months and still a lot of time out."

That timeline has not shifted. Ekitike remains on the long road rather than the final straight.

Injury list still biting

Liverpool’s medical room is not short of company for the Frenchman. Leoni has been out since suffering an ACL injury on his debut last September, a devastating blow for a defender who had barely had time to introduce himself. Bradley, meanwhile, has been sidelined since January with a knee injury of his own.

All three are seen as part of Liverpool’s long-term core. All three are watching on.

For Ekitike, the work continues in the quiet corners of Clairefontaine’s medical centre, far from the noise of Anfield. The question now is simple and sharp: when he finally returns, can he pick up where those 17 goals left off—or will this Achilles rupture mark a turning point in his Liverpool story?
