Hull City Signs Japan International Hidemasa Morita
Hull City’s Premier League return has a serious midfield anchor.
The club have confirmed the signing of Japan international Hidemasa Morita on a two-year deal, with an option for a further year, bringing in a player who has spent the last four seasons operating at the sharp end of European football.
The 31-year-old arrives on a free transfer after leaving Sporting, choosing the newly promoted side despite interest from fellow top-flight newcomers Ipswich Town. Hull, building quietly but decisively for life back in the Premier League, have moved quickly to make his experience the heartbeat of their midfield.
A serial winner in Portugal
Morita does not come as a gamble or a project. He comes with medals.
During his spell at Sporting, the midfielder collected multiple trophies, including two Primeira Liga titles and the Taça de Portugal, and played his part in a side that consistently challenged at the top of the Portuguese game. Last season he helped Sporting reach the Champions League quarter-finals, making 23 appearances in Europe’s elite competition across his time at the club.
That exposure to high-pressure, high-tempo football is exactly what Hull need as they step back into the Premier League spotlight.

Morita also brings stature on the international stage. Capped 40 times by Japan, he has long been a trusted presence in the national setup, a player comfortable dictating tempo and doing the unglamorous work that allows others to shine.
For a promoted side, that kind of international know-how can tilt tight games. It can also steady a dressing room that suddenly finds itself facing trips to some of the most intimidating grounds in world football.
A busy week in the market
Morita becomes Hull’s fourth signing of the summer and their third in a hectic week, following the arrivals of Matt Targett and Óscar Zambrano. The pattern is clear: proven quality, blended with younger talent, stitched into a squad that has to be ready from the first whistle of the new campaign.
He will join up with the squad at their training camp in Slovenia, where the coaching staff will get their first close look at their new midfield general. A minor calf injury is expected to keep him out for around a week, a short delay rather than any major concern.
