India Overcome West Indies with Record-Breaking 406-Run Chase in 2nd ODI

Historic Victory in Guwahati: India Achieves Highest ODI Run Chase

India produced an incredible batting performance to chase down a huge target of 406 runs set by the West Indies in the second ODI at Barsapara Cricket Stadium on Wednesday. The match ended with India winning by eight wickets in what turned out to be a record-breaking event.

Captain Shubman Gill led the charge with an unbeaten 223, while Rohit Sharma contributed a century, helping India surpass the massive target comfortably.

West Indies' First 400+ ODI Total Featuring Three Centuries

The West Indies posted their highest ODI total ever, reaching 405 for seven, marked by three centuries in a single innings for the first time in their history:

  • John Campbell: 101 runs off 68 balls (9 fours, 5 sixes), scoring a rapid 65-ball century inspired by Chris Gayle
  • Shai Hope: 104 runs off 94 balls (8 fours, 3 sixes), acting both as an anchor and accelerator; notably dropped on 27 by Virat Kohli
  • Amir Jangoo: 114 runs off 77 balls (13 fours, 3 sixes), achieving his second ODI century in 69 balls

This total surpassed their previous best of 389 against England in 2019. The flat pitch at Barsapara exposed India's inexperienced pace attack, though Kuldeep Yadav took 2 wickets for 65 runs.

India's Record-Breaking Run Chase

Chasing 406, openers Gill and Rohit began aggressively, putting up a strong opening partnership of 255 runs — the second-highest opening stand for India in ODIs. Rohit's innings concluded at 101 runs from 75 balls, including 10 fours and 6 sixes, at a strike rate of 134.67.

  • Rohit Sharma: 101 runs off 75 balls, LBW by Jayden Seales at 255/1 (26.2 overs)
  • His 35th ODI century came off 72 deliveries, making it the second-fastest hundred in his career
  • Became the third Indian after Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar to reach 12,000 ODI runs, and seventh batter overall
  • At 39 years and 153 days, Rohit became the oldest player to score an ODI century on Indian soil, breaking Sunil Gavaskar's record

Gill's epic innings then took center stage, setting multiple records:

  • Shubman Gill: unbeaten 223 runs off 133 balls
  • Recorded the highest individual score by an Indian captain in ODIs, surpassing Virat Kohli's previous record
  • Only the second player to score multiple double centuries in ODIs after Rohit Sharma
  • Fastest double century in ODI history, achieved in 117 balls
  • Scored his 11th ODI century, starting slow but accelerating impressively

India reached 406 for 2 in 43.3 overs with 39 balls remaining, sealing the series 2-0 with a game to spare.

After Rohit's dismissal, Virat Kohli came in and scored 29 runs before getting out attempting a ramp shot. With support from Ruturaj Gaikwad, who remained unbeaten on 31, Gill ensured India's victory by eight wickets.
