Ipswich Captain Dara O'Shea Reflects on 5-2 Defeat Against Manchester United

Ipswich captain Dara O'Shea admitted their 5-2 defeat at Manchester United felt like two different matches stitched together.

“We came in at half-time in a good place,” he told BBC Radio Suffolk, reflecting on a first half where Ipswich believed they had the edge. They were frustrated to have conceded, but O'Shea put it down to a single error rather than a pattern. “It's a mistake and these things happen. We felt like we were the better team and that we were more dangerous.”

That belief evaporated after the break.

The game flipped, the scoreline ballooned, and United ran away with it. For O'Shea, the turning point came with the hosts’ second goal, a moment he still struggled to process afterwards.

“Second half is a different story. We were extremely unlucky with the second goal. I don't really understand the ruling, or how it counts, but that's football.”

The irritation ran deeper than one decision. Ipswich have felt this before.

“We've been in these situations before. VAR hasn't been our friend before and it might be the same again,” O'Shea said, his words carrying the weight of repeated setbacks with technology.

He refused to hide behind it, though. The captain pushed the focus back onto his own dressing room.

“We've got to crack on with it and react better in those moments. There will be moments where things don't go our way, so it's a lesson and we've got to learn.”

Ipswich leave Old Trafford with no points and plenty of frustration, but also with their leader demanding that the anger turns into something more useful in the weeks ahead.
