Andoni Iraola Should Take a Risk and Trust Forgotten Liverpool Talent
The Liverpool squad is expected to improve this season after finishing fifth in the Premier League last year, a result that ended Arne Slot's tenure as manager. The drop from champions to fifth place was unexpected, and despite Slot believing his position was secure, both sides agreed it was best to part ways.
Andoni Iraola stepped in to lead the team. Although Liverpool remain unbeaten across competitions so far, there’s a sense that more impact is needed from the squad. Iraola has tended to favor certain players, but now might be the moment to take a risk on one of the Reds’ overlooked stars.
Striker Crisis Opens Door for Federico Chiesa
With Alexander Isak and Cody Gakpo sidelined by injuries, and Hugo Ekitike still recovering, Liverpool find themselves short on forwards. Jayden Danns and Lewis Koumas could fill the striker role if necessary, but that seems like a stopgap solution at best.
Federico Chiesa could become the key figure during this shortage. Despite an injury-plagued 2025-26 season and primarily playing on the wing, Chiesa has the skill to score goals. His pace may have dipped, yet with teammates like Rio Ngumoha and Victor Munoz supporting him on either flank, he might thrive as a striker.
A Chance to Prove Himself and Aid Liverpool’s Title Ambitions
Missing both Gakpo and Isak significantly weakens Liverpool’s attack. Gakpo, in particular, has been one of their top performers, contributing six goals that helped secure vital points. For the Reds to be credible title challengers, they need depth — players who can step up and maintain the team's quality in any position.
Currently, some spots in the squad have clear first and second choices, but adaptability is what sets strong teams apart. Chiesa’s time at Liverpool has not gone smoothly so far. Yet, if Iraola gives him a real chance to play up front, Chiesa might finally demonstrate his value and potentially revive his career.
