Ishmael Fuseini Returns to Training After Violent Robbery

Union Saint-Gilloise forward Ishmael Fuseini has returned to training after being the victim of a violent street robbery in Brussels, an attack captured on a team-mate’s mobile phone and swiftly handed to police.

The footage, filmed as Fuseini and two companions walked towards their vehicle, shows several individuals confronting the group before violently robbing them of watches, phones and other personal belongings. The clarity of the video allowed officers to quickly identify suspects and launch targeted searches.

Union confirmed Fuseini’s condition in a statement, describing the images as “particularly disturbing” and underlining the role of the Brussels police in the aftermath.

“He subsequently went to the hospital for a check-up and received excellent care from the Brussels police, whom we warmly thank for their outstanding work. His injuries are minor, and he resumed training yesterday,” the club said.

The Brussels Public Prosecutor’s Office later detailed the scale of the incident, stressing that three people had been attacked on their way to their car and robbed of several valuables. Two of the three victims suffered injuries serious enough to cause a temporary incapacity for work.

The investigation moved quickly. A 23-year-old suspect was remanded in custody at Haren prison after stolen items were recovered during a search of his home.

“Three individuals fell victim to a violent robbery while heading to their vehicle in Brussels,” the Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement quoted by Het Laatste Nieuws. “According to initial findings from the investigation, several individuals attacked them and stole various valuables, including watches, phones, and personal belongings.”

The suspect’s lawyer, Samuel Rosenblatt, confirmed his client is being held on charges of gang robbery with violence.

“I cannot say anything further about that, as the judicial investigation is still ongoing. My client is aware of the severity of the facts and regrets them,” he said.

At the request of the Brussels prosecutor, an investigating judge has been appointed, and the suspect — who reportedly has no prior criminal record — has been formally charged with violent gang robbery as the search for any accomplices continues.

For Fuseini, a popular figure in the RUSG dressing room, the assault is another jarring interruption in a period already scarred by physical setbacks. Under contract until 2028, the forward has scored 14 goals in 71 appearances for the club, but his 2025-26 campaign has been heavily disrupted: muscle, ankle and hamstring problems sidelined him for 25 matches over a gruelling 145-day spell.

He is back on the training pitch now, the bruises from Brussels declared minor. The psychological impact of being ambushed in the street is harder to quantify, yet as Union push on with their season, Fuseini faces a familiar challenge: absorb the blow, get back to work, and try to let his football do the talking again.
