Ivan Fresneda’s name is back on Arsenal lips again. It never really disappears for long.
The Sporting CP right-back, still only 21, has been a recurring character in Arsenal’s recruitment story for years. The latest chapter comes from Portugal, where Record have again linked him with a move to north London – and this time attached to a number that stops you in your tracks: an €80 million release clause.
A long chase that never quite happened
Arsenal’s interest in Fresneda is not a convenient, last-minute rumour. It goes back at least four years, to when he was a 17-year-old at Real Valladolid and viewed as one of the most intriguing young full-backs in Europe.
Back then, the figures were very different. The proposed deal was believed to be in the region of €15 million, with his release clause set at €30 million. A sizeable outlay for a teenager, but still within the realms of a classic Arsenal “smart buy”.
When the January 2023 window opened, the noise intensified. Fresneda’s representatives travelled to London amid strong speculation that Arsenal were ready to move. Reports at the time even suggested an agreement was in place, with a transfer delayed until the summer.
It never materialised.
Admiration, English lessons… and a different move
The connection didn’t fade easily. Fresneda later spoke of his admiration for Mikel Arteta and said he was “proud” to be linked with Arsenal. He began learning English, a detail that only fuelled the sense that a Premier League move was a matter of when, not if.
Arsenal, for their part, were said to have put a lucrative offer on the table in the summer of 2023. The path looked clear.
Then came the twist. Instead of heading to London, Fresneda left Valladolid for Sporting in a deal worth just €9 million. For a player who had been the subject of intense Premier League interest, the fee was surprisingly modest. Arsenal’s long pursuit ended not with a grand unveiling, but with a quiet detour to Lisbon.
Since then, the noise around his name has largely died down.
The €80m question
Now the story flickers back to life. Record’s report is simple enough: Fresneda is under contract at Sporting until June 2028, protected by an €80 million release clause. In the current market, they add, he is being mentioned as a possible reinforcement for Arsenal and Newcastle.
The clause is there in black and white. The link to Arsenal is familiar. The leap comes with the valuation.
With two years effectively ticked off his deal and Sporting keen to protect an asset, talk of Premier League interest can only help the Portuguese club – and Fresneda – in any negotiation over improved terms. It is a classic bargaining backdrop: long-term contract, big clause, big names watching.
Arsenal’s admiration is genuine. Right-back has been a problem zone at times under Arteta, with injuries forcing constant reshuffles and hybrid solutions. A young, technically sharp, tactically flexible full-back has obvious appeal for a coach who demands control and precision in the first phase of build-up.
But €80 million for a full-back? In this Arsenal squad? In this summer?
That is where belief starts to fray.
Reality bites for Arsenal’s summer
Arsenal are expected to commit serious funds to attacking and midfield reinforcements. The squad is close to where Arteta wants it, but the next step – turning title challenges into titles – will not be cheap in those areas of the pitch.
Against that backdrop, the idea of the club going anywhere near Fresneda’s release clause feels wildly out of step with their recent transfer strategy. Arsenal may continue to track him, as they have for years, and they may yet see an opportunity if Sporting’s demands soften or the market shifts.
But at €80 million, this is not a story about a club ready to pounce. It looks far more like a reminder of Fresneda’s potential value, a signal from Portugal that Sporting hold the cards and know it.
Arsenal’s interest is real. The price being floated is, for now, the unbelievable part.
