James Maddison Injury Update: De Zerbi Addresses Setback for Tottenham

Roberto De Zerbi has been forced to deal with an early-season setback, confirming that James Maddison has picked up a fresh injury just as he was easing his way back into competitive action for Tottenham.

The midfielder’s summer had already been a careful balancing act. After missing most of last season following surgery on a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament, Spurs handled him with caution in pre-season, limiting his minutes and refusing to rush his return.

Even so, Maddison did make the bench for the opening weekend of the Premier League. He was sent on for Mikey Moore for the final 22 minutes of a grim 3-0 defeat at Brentford, a cameo that was supposed to help him sharpen up rather than spark fresh concern.

Instead, he landed awkwardly on his shoulder. Spurs’ medical staff moved quickly, and the 29-year-old was assessed in the days that followed. De Zerbi, speaking before Wednesday’s Carabao Cup second-round tie against Charlton in north London, tried to play down the severity.

“Maddison suffered a small injury in his shoulder,” the Tottenham head coach said, describing the issue as minor.

The news still arrives at a frustrating time for a player desperate to put a lost year behind him and for a team already searching for rhythm after that heavy opening-day defeat.

De Zerbi’s update did not stop there. Mohammed Kudus, the Ghanaian forward who has been sidelined since early January with a long-term quad injury, will not feature either. He is “not yet ready” to play, with Spurs continuing to build up his fitness before throwing him back into the intensity of competitive fixtures.

There was at least some relief on the defensive front. New captain Micky van de Ven will be on the bench against Charlton, a significant boost given he did not play a single minute in pre-season following his World Cup campaign with the Netherlands and then missed the Brentford loss with a minor, unspecified problem.

Pedro Porro, Van de Ven’s vice-captain, is set for a similar role. The right-back, who also skipped pre-season and sat out the Brentford game as he worked back to full fitness after helping Spain win the World Cup in North America earlier this summer, is expected to be among the substitutes.

If injuries have clouded the build-up, new faces offer a different kind of talking point.

Savio is in line to make his Tottenham debut after completing an £85million move from Manchester City on Tuesday, a statement signing who could light up what has already become an important early cup tie for De Zerbi.

Up front, Dominic Solanke has been earmarked to start, handing him a clear chance to stake an early claim for the No9 role. On the bench, highly rated teenager Luca Williams-Barnett is set to be involved, another nod to the club’s push to blend heavyweight signings with academy promise.

For De Zerbi, the equation is simple enough: manage the setbacks, unleash the new arrivals, and make sure this season does not drift before it has even begun.
