Jamie O’Hara's Holiday Turned Hospital Drama: Food Poisoning from Cheese on Toast

Jamie O’Hara went to Portugal chasing sun, sea and a quiet break. He ended up under hospital lights in Albufeira, hooked up to a drip and cursing a plate of cheese on toast.

The former Tottenham midfielder and talkSPORT regular revealed on Instagram on Wednesday night that his holiday had taken a sharp turn. In the picture, O’Hara lies in a hospital bed, cannula in his right arm, with a blunt caption:

“Got food poisoning from cheese on toast in Albufeira.”

For a man who has spent the last year joking about Tottenham’s “absolute stinkers”, this was his own. Same energy, different setting.

Back in London, the reaction on talkSPORT’s Breakfast show was a mix of disbelief and mischief. Cheese on toast? Really?

“Is that possible?” Gabby Agbonlahor asked, genuinely baffled.

Shebahn Aherne didn’t buy it either. “I don’t think it is possible. I think he’s had something dodgy before the cheese on toast.”

Agbonlahor, never one to resist a punchline, painted his own version of events.

“He took his own cheese over to Portugal with him, it’s gone off and he’s eaten it, and got food poisoning?”

The pair then tried to make some medical sense of it. Aherne floated the idea of listeriosis, the illness linked to soft, mould-ripened cheeses such as camembert and brie, as described by the NHS. If O’Hara’s toast had been loaded with the wrong kind of cheese, the mystery might not be a mystery at all.

As the studio tried to diagnose him from afar, O’Hara checked in with a video update. The voice was familiar, the energy was not.

“Boys, it’s not good, I’m in a bad place,” he admitted. “I can’t come on, I am struggling. I’m out in Portugal, I’ve got food poisoning from cheese on toast.

“You’ll love this one as well, the restaurant that I got it from, do you know what it’s called? Fat Cats… Fat, Cats! Honestly, absolute stinker. I’m dying. Sums me up, doesn’t it?”

The name of the place only added to the farce. A man who makes a living out of winding others up had walked straight into a joke at his own expense.

Aherne had seen the video and didn’t sugar-coat it.

“He is whiter than a ghost by the way!”

Agbonlahor, who had spent the early part of the show laughing at the situation, quickly softened.

“He doesn’t look well, does he? I want to apologise for laughing at you Jamie.”

For listeners, O’Hara is most closely associated with The Sports Bar, where he and Jason Cundy spend the late evenings poking at fan bases and lighting up phone lines. That double act is due back for the new Premier League season, but Cundy’s trademark wind-up material has been drafted in ahead of schedule.

Agbonlahor knew exactly what might lift his stricken colleague’s spirits.

“Do you know what he might need while he’s sitting there in hospital? Jason Cundy, ‘Has anyone seen cheese?!’ That’ll cheer him up!”

From North London to the Algarve, O’Hara has always been a magnet for drama. This time, it wasn’t a rash tackle or a hot take that did the damage, just a plate of toast and a holiday restaurant called Fat Cats.

He’ll aim to swap the hospital gown for a headset soon enough, with The Sports Bar waiting for his return and a new season offering him plenty of fresh targets—just as long as the next one isn’t on the menu.
