Jayden Braaf: From Dortmund Prodigy to Free Agent

A few years ago, Jayden Braaf was talked about as the next gem off Borussia Dortmund’s production line. Now, at 23 and without a club, he is back in Germany trying to rescue a career that once seemed destined for the very top.

The winger, currently a free agent, is training with VfL Osnabrück as he looks to earn a contract and a fresh start in the 2. Bundesliga. The club, promoted from the 3. Liga last season, have handed him a lifeline and, crucially, a stage.

That stage comes as early as tomorrow.

Braaf is expected to feature in a friendly against Hannover 96, a low-key summer fixture that suddenly carries high personal stakes. For Osnabrück, it is a chance to assess whether the former prodigy still has the explosiveness and edge that made top clubs invest in his potential. For Braaf, it is an audition he cannot afford to fail.

The Dutchman’s path has been anything but smooth. He joined Borussia Dortmund from Manchester City in 2022 amid real excitement, billed as one of the brightest young wide players in Europe. The move was supposed to be his launchpad. Instead, his time at BVB lasted barely half a year.

Since then, the slide has been stark. After leaving Hellas Verona, Braaf has been without a club since September 2025, searching for a new home while his name quietly slipped out of the mainstream conversation. At 1.81 meters and right-footed, he still offers the physical profile and technical base that once drew scouts from across the continent, but promise alone no longer opens doors.

Interest has not completely vanished. He has recently been linked with ADO Den Haag, Portsmouth and Cádiz, clubs that see an opportunity in a talented player available on a free. Yet it is Osnabrück and the grind of German second-tier football that now sit directly in front of him.

For a player once earmarked for the Champions League, the setting is more modest. The stakes are not. One good week, one convincing performance against Hannover 96, and Braaf could secure the contract that puts his career back on track in the Bundesrepublik.

The next chapter starts with a trial, not a transfer unveiling. How long it lasts is up to him.
