Jeff Bezos-Led Group Nears One-Third Stake Purchase in Liverpool FC
Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is reportedly involved in a consortium that is close to acquiring about one-third ownership of Premier League club Liverpool FC. This comes from reports including Sky News, which identified the investor group as led by Amit Bhatia, the son-in-law of Indian steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal. The group also features Eduardo Saverin, co-founder of Facebook.
Fenway Sports Group (FSG), Liverpool's current owners, confirmed last month they had been approached by Bhatia's consortium. An FSG spokesperson stated to AFP:
"An investment consortium led, managed, and represented by Amit Bhatia has expressed interest in making a strategic minority investment in Liverpool Football Club."
Bhatia was previously a shareholder in Championship side Queens Park Rangers. Sky's report suggests the deal is nearing completion, with FSG expected to announce it possibly within this week.
At 62, Bezos ranks among the world's wealthiest individuals, with Forbes estimating his net worth above $280 billion. Meanwhile, Saverin's fortune is estimated at $33 billion. Bezos has reportedly considered buying NFL teams like the Seattle Seahawks and Washington Commanders but ultimately decided not to pursue those options.
The potential Liverpool deal, part of growing American investment in the Premier League, is said to value the club at around $6 billion. FSG acquired Liverpool in 2010 for £300 million ($405 million) and sold a minority stake last year to US private equity firm Dynasty Equity.
On the pitch, Liverpool secured the Premier League title in the 2024/25 season under manager Arne Slot, who was dismissed in May after a challenging campaign.
