Jhon Lucumí Agrees Personal Terms with Juventus
The calendar is sliding toward the back end of August, and with it the summer mercato begins to tighten its grip. At Juventus, that squeeze is being felt in one area above all: the search for a defensive upgrade that can help drag the club beyond the mediocrity of last season’s sixth-place finish.
At the center of that search stands one name: Jhon Lucumí.
Lucumí says yes to Juventus
Juventus and the Bologna center back have reached an agreement on personal terms, according to Tuttosport. The Colombian has given the green light to a five-year contract worth €2.5 million per season, plus up to €1 million in bonuses. For Lucumí, it represents a significant pay rise on his current deal at Bologna. For Juventus, it’s one more piece of the puzzle locked in.
It’s not the first time this summer the club have tied down personal terms with a target before closing a deal with his employer, so on its own it doesn’t guarantee anything. But it does confirm one crucial point: Lucumí is all-in on a move to Turin.
Multiple outlets report that the defender is effectively holding out for Juventus. He has turned down richer offers elsewhere in order to keep the Allianz Stadium at the top of his list, waiting for the Bianconeri to find a way to bring him in.
Bologna dig in on the fee
That is where the complication lies. Bologna’s stance remains firm. After Lucumí’s €28 million buyout clause expired in mid-July, the club are now reportedly seeking up to €25 million to let him go.
For a defender entering what should be his prime years and coming off a strong spell in Serie A, Bologna see no reason to discount. They know he has admirers. They know he has options. They also know he has chosen to ignore them.
Galatasaray and Besiktas are the most notable clubs to have been rebuffed, with reports indicating Lucumí has effectively told both he is holding out for Juventus. The Besiktas link carried extra intrigue given that his former Bologna coach, Vincenzo Italiano, is now in charge there. Even that connection has not tempted him.
Interest from Inter and several Premier League sides has cooled in recent weeks. The market around Lucumí has narrowed. By design. Because he wants one move, and one move only.
A waiting game in Turin
On Juventus’ side, the desire is mutual. The club see Lucumí as a key piece in reshaping a back line that still feels in transition. But wanting a player and being able to sign him are not the same thing in the current climate.
Juventus are likely operating under the familiar constraint: someone has to leave before someone else can arrive. The names in the frame are clear enough — Federico Gatti, Lloyd Kelly, Juan Cabal, or another defender in the current rotation. Until a sale materializes, the Lucumí deal stays parked.
So the situation hangs in the balance. The player waits. Bologna hold their price. Juventus look at their books and their bench and weigh up who can be sacrificed to unlock the move.
Lucumí wants Juventus. Juventus want Lucumí. The contract is ready, the intention is obvious, the path is drawn.
