JJ Gabriel's Opportunity Against Atletico Madrid
Manchester United’s pre-season is about to get a little more serious, and a 15-year-old could be right in the middle of it.
JJ Gabriel has been named in Michael Carrick’s 23-man squad for Saturday’s friendly against Atletico Madrid in Stockholm, a bold show of faith in the teenager as United raise the level of their summer opposition at the Strawberry Arena.
Gabriel, who travelled for last week’s 5-0 win over Rosenborg but stayed on the bench, is again promoted into the senior group and will be hoping this is the trip where he finally steps onto the pitch for a first-team debut. He was one of only two outfield players not used in Trondheim, alongside midfielder Jim Thwaites.
This time, the competition for minutes looks fiercer.
Step up in opposition, step up in stakes
United have moved from Wrexham to Rosenborg and now to Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid, a side that habitually drags friendlies into full-blooded contests. The squad Carrick has selected reflects that shift.
The group travelling to Stockholm is slightly smaller than the parties that went to Helsinki and Trondheim, trimmed and tightened as United edge closer to the new season. Several players who only just returned to first-team training have been left behind, their reintegration delayed rather than rushed.
Two notable names are back, though. Altay Bayindir and Amad have rejoined the squad after their World Cup commitments and are both in contention to feature. The Turkish goalkeeper and the Ivorian winger reported back to Carrington at the start of the week and have been cleared to travel.
Belgian pair Senne Lammens and Youri Tielemans, who checked in on Thursday, have not made the cut for this one, the game arriving too quickly for them after their late return.
Youth chances reshuffled
The inclusion of Gabriel and Thwaites comes as others make way. Toby Collyer, Dan Gore, Jacob Devaney and Chido Obi all drop out of the squad for this fixture, a reminder of how quickly the pecking order can shift in pre-season as staff refine their plans.
For Gabriel, the picture is clear: he is still there, still trusted, and now facing a very different kind of examination against La Liga opposition. If Carrick turns to him, it will be in a game where the tempo and physicality should mirror something far closer to competitive action.
Thwaites, unused in both games so far, will also be pushing for his first minutes of the summer, with the midfield group tightened around him.
