Joao Cancelo's Barcelona Return Could Be a Bargain

Joao Cancelo’s Barcelona return is moving into its final act – and it could come at a bargain price.

The Portuguese full-back, currently on the books at Al-Hilal and under contract in Saudi Arabia until 2027, is edging closer to a permanent switch back to the Catalan club. What began as a standard transfer negotiation is now veering towards something far more favourable for Barça: a possible free transfer.

All summer, talks have rumbled on between Barcelona and Al-Hilal, with the Saudi Pro League side initially said to be seeking a fee in the region of 10-15 million euros for the defender. That figure always looked like a hurdle for a club still carefully counting every euro.

Now the landscape is shifting.

According to Saudi sports newspaper Arriyadiyah and reporter Hamad Al-Suwaih, Al-Hilal are close to agreeing a contract termination with Cancelo. The report states that the club “nears the signing of contract termination agreement with Cancelo, paving the way for his signing with Spanish club Barcelona.”

If that agreement is finalised, Barcelona would be free to move for the 30-year-old without paying a transfer fee, turning a complicated negotiation into a potential coup.

Cancelo has never hidden his intentions. After a successful second loan spell at Camp Nou last season, he made it abundantly clear he wanted to stay. He enjoyed the football, the role, the stage. He pushed for a return once the campaign ended and has kept that stance as the new La Liga season approaches.

Now, with Al-Hilal seemingly prepared to cut ties, the door is swinging open.

Barcelona wanted him. Cancelo wanted Barcelona. If the final paperwork falls into place, both sides are about to get exactly what they’ve been waiting for.
