Enzo Fernandez's Chelsea Return: From Boos to Chants in 3-1 Win
Enzo Fernandez’s return to Stamford Bridge began with boos and ended in song on Saturday, as Chelsea wrapped up pre-season with a 3-1 win over Real Sociedad.
The Argentine midfielder stepped onto the pitch in the 64th minute, replacing Reece James. Before heading off, James handed him the captain’s armband, a small but pointed show of trust from the dressing room.
The stands told a different story at first.
According to French network RMC, a section of Chelsea supporters greeted Fernandez with jeers as he jogged on. It was his first appearance for the club since coming back from the World Cup, where Argentina lost the final 1-0 to Spain, and the tension around his future was waiting for an outlet.
Not everyone joined in. Another part of the crowd rose to applaud him, trying to drown out the whistles and make it clear they still wanted him in blue. As the game settled and Chelsea pushed on, the hostility began to fade.
The mood shifted. The pressure around him didn’t.
Sky Sports reported that the early boos eventually gave way to chants of “Oh, Enzo Fernandez,” a familiar refrain rolling around Stamford Bridge as the clock ticked down. From jeers to backing vocals in the space of half an hour – a neat snapshot of a fanbase split over one of its biggest stars.
Behind that initial backlash lies a deeper frustration. Some Chelsea supporters are angry at what they see as Fernandez’s desire to leave the club this summer, particularly after the team failed to qualify for the Champions League. For a fanbase already bruised by inconsistency and upheaval, the idea of a key player looking elsewhere has not gone down well.
The relationship had already been strained. Earlier in the summer, Fernandez publicly spoke about his wish to play for Real Madrid one day. Those comments did not disappear quietly. He was left out of the squad for two matches, a clear sign that the club had taken note of both the noise and the timing.
Now the transfer market has added another layer.
Manchester City have moved into the picture in recent days, with the European champions monitoring his situation as uncertainty grows around Rodri, who has been linked with a possible move to Barcelona. City boss Enzo Maresca, who knows Fernandez well from their time together at Chelsea, is understood to be one of his strongest admirers.
So Fernandez finds himself in a strange place: applauded by some, jeered by others, coveted elsewhere, and still wearing the Chelsea armband on a summer evening at Stamford Bridge.
The season is about to start. The question is whether he will be starting it in blue.
