Joao Cancelo Returns to Barcelona on Permanent Deal
Joao Cancelo is back at Barcelona – this time to stay.
The Portugal full-back has signed a three-year contract at Camp Nou after mutually terminating his deal with Al-Hilal, ending a brief and turbulent chapter in Saudi Arabia and closing the book on his Manchester City career.
A return that always felt inevitable
Cancelo joined Al-Hilal from City on a three-year deal in 2024, but never truly settled. He finished last season on loan at Barca, playing a key role as they surged past Real Madrid to win La Liga. That title run, and the connection he quickly rebuilt with the club and its fans, set the stage for what followed.
Once his Al-Hilal contract was torn up this summer, the 32-year-old became a free agent. Barcelona moved quickly. The club have now tied him down until 2027, ending the cycle of short-term solutions and finally making his stay permanent.
"It's my dream," Cancelo said. "I'm where I want to be and I am very happy. I like the club, I identify with it. I feel loved here and I promise to give everything for this club."
For a player who has lived out of a suitcase for much of the last decade, the words carry weight.
A career built on constant movement
Spain was Cancelo’s first big leap. He arrived at Valencia from Benfica in 2014, initially on loan, before establishing himself in La Liga. That spell launched him onto Europe’s top tier.
From there, the journey became a whirlwind. A loan at Inter Milan in 2017-18. A permanent move to Juventus in 2018. A high-profile transfer to Manchester City in 2019, where he evolved into one of the most inventive full-backs in the game.
The stability didn’t last. He finished the 2022-23 season on loan at Bayern Munich, then spent 2023-24 at Barca on loan from City. This new deal marks his third spell with the Spanish giants – but the first where he belongs to them outright.
Barca reshape with familiar faces
Cancelo is not the only arrival with Manchester roots. Barcelona have also completed the signing of his former City team-mate Rodri, agreeing a fee of about £65m for the Spain midfielder.
Together, they bring experience, control and personality to a squad being reshaped for another run at domestic and European honours.
Cancelo has his wish. A permanent home at the club where he feels “loved”. Now comes the harder part: proving this long-awaited deal turns a dream into a defining chapter of his career.
