Joel Colwill Shines in Championship Start for Cardiff City

Brian Barry-Murphy believes Joel Colwill is only just getting started in front of goal after the youngster marked his first Championship start with a crucial strike for Cardiff City.

The 21-year-old rose to head home and rescue a 1-1 draw against Stoke City, halting a run of two straight defeats and injecting some much-needed life into the Bluebirds’ early-season campaign. His goal didn’t just change the scoreline; it changed the mood.

Colwill, who hit seven goals last season, drove Cardiff’s second-half revival. He found pockets of space, demanded the ball and, for a few minutes, looked like he might win the game on his own. One effort crashed back off the post, inches away from turning a point into all three.

"It was a great finish and very important for us - he carries a big goal threat," said head coach Brian Barry-Murphy, underlining just how central Colwill is to his plans. "You saw he got close to another goal. His movement in the box in the second half, particularly, was very good."

The change came after the break. Barry-Murphy pushed Colwill higher up the pitch, closer to Yousef Salech, and Cardiff suddenly had a sharper edge in the final third.

"Joel played a little bit too deep in the first half, but in the second half he was very good, very close to Yousef," the Irishman explained. "A lot of our best moments in the box, he was on the premises, which is a big part of his role for the team."

While Joel stepped up, Cardiff had to cope without his older brother, Rubin Colwill, whose creativity and set-piece quality have become increasingly influential. Rubin missed the game with an ankle problem, though Barry-Murphy is cautiously optimistic the lay-off will be brief.

"Rubin's ankle wasn't OK yesterday. He didn't train," he said. "There was talk of putting him on the bench, but I wasn't sure he would be fully fit if he was to come on.

"That was also the case on Saturday, and I didn't want to risk it because of what he's been through with the ankle."

Cardiff, still searching for their first Championship win of the season, head to Bolton next. Barry-Murphy hopes to have the elder Colwill back in the squad, with the younger already staking his claim as a key goal threat.

If Joel’s first league start is a sign of what’s coming, the Colwill brothers could yet drive the Bluebirds’ season in tandem.
