Julian Alvarez Transfer Saga: Barcelona vs Atletico Madrid
Arsenal’s pursuit of Julian Alvarez has run headlong into a brick wall of Atletico Madrid defiance – and Barcelona are feeling it too.
The Argentine forward, preparing for the World Cup final against Spain, has become the centre of Europe’s most stubborn transfer saga of the summer. Barcelona want him. Arsenal are watching closely. Atletico, though, are digging in.
Barcelona push, Atletico refuse to blink
For weeks, Barcelona have circled Alvarez, identifying the 24-year-old as their priority attacking signing. They have already seen at least one bid knocked back, with Atletico making it brutally clear they will not strengthen a domestic rival on the cheap.
The message out of Madrid has been simple: pay the €500million (£431m) release clause or forget it.
That stance hardened after Real Madrid tried to test Atletico’s resolve with a bold €150m (£129m) offer at the start of June. That, too, was rejected. The price is the clause, nothing less.
Even so, Barcelona president Joan Laporta insists the Catalan club have gone big.
“We have made a very significant offer; if they are willing to accept it, fantastic, but it won’t be unlimited. We have to make a decision. Whether we maintain the offer or not depends on how these last two weeks of July unfold,” he told SER.
Laporta made no secret of Alvarez’s desire to move.
“The player has spoken out, and that’s why the issue is still open. It’s clear that the player wants a change of scenery, and we are prepared to welcome him. We’ll see how it all unfolds.”
He also underlined that Barcelona are not putting all their hopes on one deal, pointing to the imminent signing of Karim Adeyemi and stressing that there are “alternatives” if Alvarez proves unattainable.
That hint of flexibility in Barcelona’s position was met with a very different tone from Atletico.
Atletico double down
Atletico president Enrique Cerezo responded swiftly and with a knowing smile.
“Joan Laporta is a good friend, he’s a great president, and he knows very well, as do all of you, where Julian Alvarez will be playing next year,” he said.
The implication was unmistakable: Alvarez stays in red and white.
If there was any doubt about Atletico’s stance, CEO Miguel Angel Gil removed it.
“My position is clear, the club’s position is clear. We’ve made it known to the player, his representatives, and the president of Barcelona,” he said.
“I have absolutely no doubt that Atletico is the right place in the world for Julian, and that Julian is the perfect centre-forward for Atletico Madrid. We want to keep him.
“We do NOT want to transfer him. We didn’t accept an offer of €100 million, and we won’t accept one of €150 million or even €200 million."
Barcelona might be weighing whether to walk away. Atletico are not even at the negotiating table.
Arsenal wait in the shadows
Amid the noise between LaLiga rivals, Arsenal’s interest quietly lingers in the background.
The Gunners have tracked Alvarez for over a year, with Mikel Arteta understood to be open to moving for the World Cup winner if a Barcelona transfer collapses. Arsenal’s need for a ruthless, multi-functional centre-forward is no secret, and Alvarez fits that profile as well as anyone in Europe.
For now, though, they are spectators to a stand-off between Atletico and Barcelona.
The problem for Arsenal is that the player himself has already nailed his colours to the Camp Nou mast. Speaking to ESPN last month, Alvarez made his intentions clear without quite naming his destination.
“I don't think it's the right moment to talk, but I also don't want to hide. I try to be an honest person.
“I spoke with the people at [Atlético] who I needed to speak with. I think the best thing for everyone is a transfer. I want to fulfil my dream.”
That dream, by every indication, is Barcelona. Not north London.
So Arsenal wait. Barcelona push. Atletico refuse to budge.
One side will eventually have to move. Right now, it does not look like it will be the club holding the player’s registration.
