Juventus Defender Federico Gatti Injured by Fan in Friendly

Federico Gatti’s pre-season took a surreal and potentially costly twist when he was injured not by an opponent, but by one of his own club’s supporters.

The Juventus centre-back hurt his ankle during the traditional friendly between the first team and the reserve side, an exhibition usually wrapped in smiles and selfies. This time, it may cost him the start of the Serie A season.

From applause to alarm

The first half had just ended. The whistle went, players began drifting towards the tunnel, and Gatti lingered to acknowledge the fans, applauding the stands in a routine gesture of thanks.

Behind him, though, the mood shifted.

Several supporters jumped the barriers and sprinted onto the pitch, heading towards the players. Gatti, focused on the crowd in front of him, didn’t see them coming.

The first fan to hit the grass tried to brake. He couldn’t. Losing his balance, he slid across the turf and crashed straight into the defender, sending Gatti sprawling to the ground.

The collision looked clumsy rather than malicious, but the damage was immediate. Instead of posing for photos, the Juventus defender was left clutching his ankle and then limping away, the festive atmosphere punctured in an instant.

Season opener at risk

According to reports from "Mundo Deportivo", the ankle problem forced Gatti to miss Juventus training on Tuesday. His involvement in the Serie A opener against Frosinone now appears highly unlikely.

For the coaching staff, it is a headache they did not anticipate. Gatti had been working normally through pre-season, physically ready for the competitive kick-off, only to be sidelined by an incident that had nothing to do with a tackle, a duel, or even the ball.

The timing could not be worse. Defensive plans for the opening fixture may need to be redrawn, and a player pencilled in for a key role is suddenly a doubt because of a freak collision with a fan.

Tradition under scrutiny

Inside the club, the fallout goes beyond one injured ankle.

The friendly against the reserve side has long been treated as a celebration: a relaxed curtain-raiser where supporters get unusually close to the players, a symbolic embrace between team and fans before the serious business starts.

That closeness has always carried a risk. Pitch invasions have happened before during this fixture, usually ending in nothing more than chaotic hugs and hurried security interventions. This time, they produced a first-team injury.

Now, with Gatti’s availability for the league opener in jeopardy, Juventus are facing uncomfortable questions about how the event is run. Barriers, security lines, and even the very format of the match are likely to come under review.

The club must decide: can this pre-season party survive in its current form, when one misplaced slide from an overexcited supporter can derail a defender’s start to the campaign?
