Atlético-MG vs RB Bragantino: Sudamericana Quarterfinal Decider

The night at Arena MRV comes with a simple promise: one of Atlético-MG or Red Bull Bragantino will leave with a place in the CONMEBOL Sudamericana quarterfinals. The other sees the continental road end here.

Atlético arrive with the advantage and the wind at their backs. The 1–0 win in Bragança gives Galo the comfort of playing for a draw at home, with the ball rolling from 7 p.m. (Brasília time). Add to that the 3–0 thrashing of Grêmio in the Brasileirão, and the atmosphere in Belo Horizonte is exactly what you’d expect: confident, loud, and demanding.

Galo at full strength, with stars returning

Boosted by recent results, Atlético step onto their own turf with what is effectively their strongest available side. The rotation used against Grêmio is over. Natanael, Maycon and Bernard, all rested in the league, are back in the XI for a night that does not allow for experiments.

The absences are known and significant. Thiago Borbas, whose rights belong to Bragantino, is unavailable. So are the injured Igor Gomes, Scarpa, Léo Duarte, Lyanco and Índio. The solution up front is clear: Reinier leads the attack.

Atlético-MG’s starting lineup: Everson; Natanael, Ruan, Vitor Hugo and Lodi; Alan Franco, Maycon, Victor Hugo and Bernard; Cuello and Reinier.

With that structure, Galo have protection, control, and creativity. They don’t need to chase the game. They just need to manage it. But in knockout football, that can be the most dangerous mindset of all.

Bragantino chase a comeback away from home

On the other side, Bragantino travel knowing exactly what is required: overturn the 1–0 deficit, in one of the most hostile new venues in Brazilian football. There is no margin for calculation. They have to score.

There is at least some good news for the visitors. Mosquera and Rodriguinho are back in the squad. Only one of them, though, goes straight into the team: Rodriguinho starts in midfield, tasked with linking play and finding gaps in an Atlético defense that has grown in confidence over the past week.

RB Bragantino’s starting lineup: Cleiton; Agustin Sant'Anna; Pedro Henrique, Gustavo Marques and Juninho Capixaba; Ramires, Rodriguinho and Lucas Barbosa; Herrera, Vinicinho and Isidro Pitta.

It is an aggressive setup, with plenty of mobility in the front three and full-backs ready to push high. Bragantino know that a cautious approach does them no favors here.

So the stage is set: Galo with the edge, Bragantino forced to take risks, and Arena MRV ready to judge who truly belongs in the Sudamericana quarterfinals.
