Juventus Goalkeeper Dilemma: Emiliano Martinez or David De Gea?
Juventus are drawing up a familiar shortlist. At the top sits Emiliano Martinez. Just behind him, according to Calciomercato, is a name that once dominated Europe’s goalkeeping landscape: David De Gea.
The plan in Turin is clear enough. Michel Di Gregorio will start the season as No. 1, but the club want someone to push him, someone to keep standards high. Martinez is the preferred choice, the big swing. There is no guarantee they land him.
So the conversation turns to Florence.
De Gea, reborn in violet
At Fiorentina, De Gea has quietly rebuilt a reputation many thought had slipped away. After a spell out of the game as a free agent, he stepped back into Serie A and, over two seasons, reminded everyone why he once stood among the elite.
Last season he kept 10 clean sheets in 37 league appearances, following on from 11 shut-outs in his debut campaign. The numbers show a goalkeeper still making a difference: a goals-prevented figure of +1.06, up from 0.59 the year before, underlining that he is not just standing there, he is saving points.
At 35, he remains a competent, high-level option. His experience, personality and leadership fit neatly with what Luciano Spalletti demands from the last line of defence. Those inside Juventus believe he ticks all of those boxes.
Fiorentina felt his impact. De Gea played a key role in steering the club away from relegation danger after they flirted with disaster. When they flew too close to the sun, he was often the one dragging them back to safety.
On paper, it makes sense. For a club chasing trophies now, a veteran with a proven record is a tempting safety net.
The old habit Juventus cannot shake
Yet this is where the debate around Juventus turns sharper.
De Gea would bring authority to the dressing room and reliability between the posts. He would not, however, drag the project into a new era. This is the tension at the heart of the move: short-term assurance against long-term vision.
Juventus have been here before. Time and again they have reached for players in the autumn of their careers, hoping experience will mask structural issues. That pattern has contributed to a squad that has aged without evolving, a team that has slowly lost its edge while others in Italy and Europe refreshed and rebuilt.
The goalkeeping market across Europe is rich with younger, ambitious options. Keepers who can grow, learn, and eventually own the No. 1 shirt for a decade. That is the profile that should be pushing Di Gregorio, not just covering for him.
A signing in that mould would give Juventus what they have lacked in several positions: a clear succession plan. Someone who can challenge immediately and still be there when the next cycle of the club truly begins.
De Gea, for all his qualities, does not fit that description.
A crossroads in goal
This is why the choice of Martinez, De Gea or a younger alternative feels bigger than a routine squad tweak. It is a small test of what Juventus want to be.
Do they lean again on a veteran to plug a gap and hope the rest of the team carries the future? Or do they finally use this opening to invest in a goalkeeper who can grow with the project, not just stand in front of it?
De Gea would help them through the next season or two. He might even win them points and games that matter. But if Juventus truly intend to dominate Serie A again and return as a force in Europe, the braver, smarter move lies in youth, not in one more ageing star.
