Karim Adeyemi's Move to Barcelona Nears Completion

Karim Adeyemi’s long flirtation with Barcelona is finally moving towards a decisive moment. What was once a distant ambition is now an advanced negotiation, shaped by a player who has made up his mind and a selling club with dwindling leverage.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the German forward has reached a full agreement with Barcelona on the length of his contract and his salary. The 24-year-old is ready to commit to a five-year deal, a clear signal that both sides see this as a long-term partnership rather than a short-term fix.

The message to Borussia Dortmund has been just as firm. Adeyemi has told the club he wants them to negotiate exclusively with Barcelona – and to do it quickly. No auctions, no last-minute Premier League hijackings. Just one preferred destination.

A dream he never really hid

Adeyemi has been open for years about what Barcelona means to him. The admiration for the club, the desire to wear the Blaugrana shirt – none of it has been disguised.

To push that dream along, he placed his future in the hands of Jorge Mendes. The Portuguese superagent tried to engineer the move last summer, only to see it collapse against the hard wall of Barcelona’s salary cap and doubts over Adeyemi’s form at the time.

Those doubts have eased. The financial framework at Barça has shifted just enough. Now both player and club believe the conditions are finally right. Adeyemi, aware that such an opportunity may not come again, is pushing as hard as he can to make sure it doesn’t slip away twice.

Dortmund change stance

Behind the scenes, the break with Dortmund has been brewing for months.

Back in February, Adeyemi informed the Bundesliga club he had no intention of extending a contract that runs until 2027. Dortmund responded with a long-term renewal offer, built around gradual salary increases and the promise of a central role.

He said no.

By spring, Dortmund had withdrawn that proposal altogether and quietly put him on the market, waiting for a serious bid. The expectation was clear: the Premier League would come calling with heavy money.

It never really did.

That silence opened the door for Mendes to move Barcelona into pole position. With no English bidding war to drive up the fee, the Catalans suddenly looked like the most coherent and committed option on the table.

Barcelona hold the cards

Now the dynamics are obvious. Dortmund need to sell. Adeyemi wants only Barcelona. That combination hands the Spanish club a strong position at the negotiating table.

Dortmund value the winger at around €40 million, but the final figure is likely to land lower, especially with time working against them. Every week without an agreement chips away at his market value and reinforces the impression of a player heading for the exit with a single door open.

There is also room for creativity. One or more Barcelona players could be included in the deal to soften the cash outlay and help both clubs balance their books.

From Barcelona’s perspective, Adeyemi fits the broader project. At 24, he slots neatly into their long-term planning. A five-year contract allows the transfer fee to be spread over several seasons, easing the impact on their fragile finances. With Mendes helping shape the structure, the operation is being built to sit comfortably within the club’s salary limits rather than strain them.

Sporting logic and economic reality, for once, are aligned.

The final obstacle is purely transactional: Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund still have to close the gap on the transfer fee and any potential add-ons or player exchanges. But with the player pushing, the agent manoeuvring, and Dortmund resigned to a sale, the direction of travel is clear.

Now the question is not whether Adeyemi will leave, but how soon Barcelona can turn his long-stated dream into a signature on a contract and a new attacking weapon at Montjuïc.
