Kuldeep Yadav Named Player of the Match Over Virat Kohli Despite Century in IND vs WI 1st ODI
Virat Kohli delivered a brilliant unbeaten 139 off 88 balls as India chased down a target of 296 set by West Indies at the Greenfield International Cricket Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram. Despite this impressive performance, the Player of the Match award went to Kuldeep Yadav, who took 4 wickets for 40 runs.
India secured an eight-wicket victory in the opening ODI of the series. Alongside Kohli, Shubman Gill also scored a century, while Kuldeep’s bowling played a crucial role in limiting the West Indies’ total to 295 for 7.
Kohli's Batting Masterclass
Batting at number three, Kohli smashed 10 fours and nine sixes during his innings. His unbeaten knock helped India finish the chase comfortably in 41.4 overs, with 50 balls remaining. This innings was one of Kohli’s standout performances in ODIs, showcasing his ability to dominate a high target.
Kuldeep Yadav's Impactful Bowling
Kuldeep Yadav’s four-wicket haul came at a critical moment when West Indies looked set for a big score. The visitors had a strong opening partnership of 135 runs between John Campbell and Justin Greaves, with Greaves reaching his maiden ODI century. Kuldeep broke that partnership by dismissing Campbell and then went on to take the wickets of Shai Hope, Greaves, and Jewel Andrew, restricting West Indies below 300.
Player of the Match Decision Explained
There is no fixed rule deciding the Player of the Match award. Usually, the commentary panel consults with umpires and match officials before making a subjective call. Typically, batting performances tend to receive more recognition, but this time Kuldeep's bowling was deemed more influential despite Kohli’s century.
Why Kuldeep Over Kohli?
The award panel did not provide an official explanation for choosing Kuldeep over Kohli. Still, Kuldeep’s key breakthroughs after West Indies’ strong start were pivotal in shifting the momentum towards India. His ability to read the batsmen and deliver variations helped stem the flow of runs and triggered a collapse.
"I actually loved the batting from Shubman and Virat bhai, it was a special inning from them. It feels awkward to receive the Man of the Match award seeing the way Virat batted, it was an outstanding inning," Kuldeep said during the post-match ceremony.
"I think personally I like my rhythm, to be very honest. I was very calm in my rhythm and just trying to bowl whatever I felt like bowling, just varying the pace, variations were superb, just reading the batters, where they’re going to hit me, and yeah, I bowled very, very, very good in rhythm," he added.
Reaction and Context
Kohli’s unbeaten 139 was certainly a top contender for the award, especially considering how batting performances often grab individual accolades. The decision not to award him drew some surprise, especially given his stature. Former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has previously criticized the process of selecting Player of the Match awards, particularly when bowlers' contributions are overlooked.
