La Liga 2026-27 Predictions: Title Race, Top Scorer, Key Matches and More
Barcelona have claimed the last two La Liga titles and three of the past four, but Real Madrid has brought back Jose Mourinho and invested heavily in new players to challenge for the crown again. Under Hansi Flick, Barcelona secured consecutive league wins with a four-point gap in 2024/25 and an eight-point margin in 2025/26 over Real Madrid.
Madrid's transfer activity looks promising, yet Mourinho’s tactical prowess at this level remains unproven. Meanwhile, Barcelona hasn't been very active recently but still holds plenty of young talent and may make further signings before the window closes. We think Barcelona remains best placed to defend their title.
Title winner: Barcelona
Predicted League Standings 2026-27
- 1st: Barcelona
- 2nd: Real Madrid
- 3rd: Atletico Madrid
- 4th: Athletic Club
- 5th: Villarreal
The top five should secure Champions League qualification, with Spain expected to keep its fifth European spot thanks to recent dominance alongside England. Villarreal might slip a bit from their third place last season but should remain close.
Athletic Club struggled with injuries last year, finishing 12th despite strong expected goal metrics. If they stay healthy, a rise into Europe spots seems likely. Other teams like Real Betis, Celta Vigo, and last year's Copa del Rey winners Real Sociedad are poised to fight for other European competition places.
- Champions League places: Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Athletic Club, Villarreal
- Other European places: Real Betis, Celta Vigo, Real Sociedad
Golden Boot Prediction
Kylian Mbappe has dominated La Liga's scoring charts even as Real Madrid missed out on trophies recently. His goal tally has no real rival, and the arrival of Yan Diomande will add attacking creativity that should help Mbappe increase his numbers further.
Though the overlap between Mbappe and Vinicius Jr. on the left wing has created challenges for Real Madrid’s overall play, it hasn’t hindered Mbappe’s personal scoring output. Expect him to lead the Golden Boot race once more.
Golden Boot winner: Kylian Mbappe
Key Fixtures to Watch
El Clasico Matchups
- October 25, 2026: Barcelona vs. Real Madrid (Camp Nou)
- May 9, 2027: Real Madrid vs. Barcelona (Santiago Bernabeu)
Last season, the El Clasico games were split evenly with each team winning at home, while Barcelona also took a 3-2 victory on neutral ground in the Supercopa final. These encounters tend to be fiercely contested, and we expect another split this time around. The May fixture could become a thrilling title decider if the championship is still undecided.
Madrid Derby
- September 20, 2026: Atletico Madrid vs. Real Madrid (Metropolitano)
- April 4, 2027: Real Madrid vs. Atletico Madrid (Santiago Bernabeu)
Real Madrid has edged these derbies recently but struggles to win at Atletico’s fortress. Without Mourinho cracking that challenge, a split of victories seems likely, with Madrid holding advantage only on neutral grounds.
Basque Derby
- November 1, 2026: Athletic Club vs. Real Sociedad (San Mames)
- May 2, 2027: Real Sociedad vs. Athletic Club (Reale Arena)
Both Basque teams have solidified their place among the top half of the table, making these matches important for bragging rights and points. Last year, Real Sociedad took four points against Athletic Club and won both Copa del Rey semis meetings en route to the trophy and European qualification. Athletic Club could bounce back this season to claim some victories here.
Catalan Derby
- January 3, 2027: Espanyol vs. Barcelona (RCDE Stadium)
- April 18, 2027: Barcelona vs. Espanyol (Camp Nou)
Barcelona has dominated this rivalry for years, not losing to Espanyol in La Liga since 2009 and last beaten in any competition in 2018. This season looks set to continue that trend.
