Lamine Camara: Premier League's Next Midfield Sensation
Lamine Camara has barely caught his breath after a breakout year in France, and already half of the Premier League seems to be circling.
The 22-year-old Monaco midfielder, signed from FC Metz for €15million in July 2024, has developed at pace in the principality. Seventy-one appearances later, he is no longer just a promising youngster in Ligue 1 – he is a fully-fledged midfield engine, and his name is now at the centre of a battle involving Manchester United, Liverpool, Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest.
A World Cup platform, a Premier League queue
Camara’s rise has not come quietly. The Senegal international started all four of his country’s games at the World Cup, driving Aliou Cissé’s side from box to box before their painful round-of-32 exit to Belgium. He tackled, he carried the ball, he created. He looked like a player built for the modern game.
He has taken that form back to club level. Back in Monaco colours, he played his part in a lively 3-2 pre-season win over Liverpool on Sunday – the kind of showcase that tends to sharpen interest rather than cool it.
According to French outlet Foot Mercato, that interest has now boiled over into a “fierce” contest to bring him to England. Manchester United and Liverpool have both been tracking him for months, having already expressed interest earlier this year and continuing to monitor his situation closely.
They are not alone. And they are not in control.
Palace make their move, Forest ready theirs
While the two heavyweights weigh up their next step, Crystal Palace have already acted. Palace are reported to have submitted a concrete offer for Camara, planting a flag in a race many assumed would be dominated by the traditional giants.
Nottingham Forest are not standing back either. They are said to be poised to lodge an official bid of their own in the coming days, a sign of how highly Camara is rated across the division.
Monaco, though, are in no rush to cash in.
Initial indications suggested the Ligue 1 side wanted around €50m (£43m) for their midfield jewel. Separate reports in France now paint a more aggressive stance: Monaco are believed to be holding out for €60m (£51m) and have already turned down a €50m proposal from Palace.
The message from the principality is clear. If you want him, pay up.
United’s rebuild and a missing piece
For Manchester United, Camara sits in the middle of a broader midfield rebuild. They have already brought in Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans this summer, reshaping the core of Erik ten Hag’s options. A third midfielder is on the agenda to complete that overhaul.
United have been forced to pivot in the market. Targets such as Alex Scott and Aurelien Tchouameni look likely to escape their grasp, and the recruitment team has widened the search to names like Sander Berge, Tyler Adams and Carlos Baleba.
Camara, though, offers something slightly different. He is not yet a superstar, not yet a marketing headline, but he combines ferocious tackling with the ability to glide past opponents and unlock space in the final third. For a club that needs legs, aggression and creativity in equal measure, that profile is hard to ignore.
The question is whether United are prepared to go into a bidding war with clubs who have already put money on the table.
Liverpool’s midfield question
Across the North West, Liverpool’s needs are just as obvious. Jürgen Klopp’s side requires fresh energy and quality in midfield, and Camara ticks both boxes.
He would arrive as a player capable of covering ground, disrupting play and carrying the ball through the lines – precisely the kind of presence that could free Alexis Mac Allister to operate higher up the pitch after a difficult campaign. There is also a potential domino effect: Camara could effectively step into the space that might be left if Inter Milan succeed in prising Curtis Jones away from Anfield.
Liverpool have admired him long enough to know what he offers. The dilemma now is whether admiration turns into a decisive bid before Palace or Forest steal a march.
A €60m question
So the scene is set. One of Ligue 1’s standout young midfielders. Four Premier League clubs. A selling club that knows exactly what it has and is not inclined to fold cheaply.
Monaco have drawn their line at €60m. Palace have already tested it and been rebuffed. Forest are readying their shot. United and Liverpool hover, calculating value, squad balance and long-term upside.
At some point, someone will blink.
When they do, the answer will say a lot about who truly believes Lamine Camara is not just another promising talent, but a midfielder to build around for the next decade.
