Lamine Yamal on What Barcelona Needs to Win the Champions League
Lamine Yamal has made it clear that Barcelona is aiming higher than just enjoying their promising start to the season. The team wants to compete for the biggest trophies, not simply settle for early success.
The Blaugrana have emerged as one of the standout teams this campaign, and Yamal believes their squad has the quality and unity necessary to challenge for major titles.
On the Champions League Challenge
Speaking to On Sport (via Mundo Deportivo), the forward discussed Barcelona's current form, their Champions League hopes, and comparisons between teammates Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha, alongside insights into coach Hansi Flick's mentality.
Yamal stressed the difficulty of winning the Champions League, noting that one bad game can abruptly end a team's run. He pointed out that experience and luck play significant roles when the margins are so fine.
"It all comes down to fate. The Champions League isn’t decided in a single match; you can play badly and lose the title. So you need luck, along with experience, and these things build up year after year," he said.
While the team can control how they perform, knockout rounds often hinge on small moments, injuries, finishing, and handling pressure. Yet, Yamal’s ambition remains high.
"I hope luck is on our side this year. We’re playing to win the title; we’re not here just for a stroll. We want to win and bring the trophy back to Barcelona, and God willing, we’ll achieve victory this year."
Comparing Lewandowski and Raphinha
When asked to compare Lewandowski and Raphinha, Yamal avoided picking sides. Instead, he emphasized how their different skills strengthen the team.
"I don’t think it’s a question of better or worse. The team adapts to different players, and each player has different strengths. Robert, for example, stands out for his ability to finish attacking moves, whilst Raphinha is a great passer. Each has their own strengths and skills, and every player stands out for what they do."
Barcelona’s Growing Strength and Unity
Yamal expressed optimism about the squad’s development. New players have adapted quickly, and existing members have built stronger connections, which has helped Barcelona start the season well.
"We’re in great form at the moment and we’re keen to keep playing entertaining and exciting football. I think there’s been a step up in standard, performance and quality, both because of the new players who have settled in well and because of the chemistry between the established players, which is growing stronger by the day."
He also highlighted the shared goal driving the squad forward.
"We all play with the same mindset – a winning mindset – and we’ll always do what we believe is best for the team. We’re one big family within the squad, and our aim is always to win," Yamal concluded.
