Leanne Kiernan Joins Newcastle United: A New Challenge Ahead
Leanne Kiernan has swapped Anfield for a new project in the north-east, leaving Liverpool to join Newcastle United in the Women’s Championship for an undisclosed fee.

From promotion hero to new challenge
Kiernan arrived at Liverpool from West Ham in the summer of 2021 and quickly became central to Matt Beard’s rebuild. Across 76 appearances in all competitions, she struck 23 goals, but one season in particular defined her spell on Merseyside.
In 2021-22, Liverpool stormed out of the second tier as champions, and Kiernan led the line. She finished as the club’s top scorer in the league with 13 goals, a relentless runner in behind and a constant outlet for a side intent on climbing back into the WSL. That campaign restored Liverpool’s top-flight status and underlined Kiernan’s value as a big-moment forward.
Game time became harder to come by as Liverpool evolved, and the second half of last season took her to Nottingham Forest on loan in the same division Newcastle now inhabit. Those months kept her sharp in the Championship and underlined that her next permanent move needed to be somewhere she could be a fixture, not a fringe option.
A fresh start on Tyneside
At 27, with 38 caps for Ireland, Kiernan has chosen Newcastle as the club where she wants to become exactly that.
"I'm really excited. I’m looking forward to a fresh start and meeting the fans," she said after the move was confirmed. "It was a dream of mine to come and play professionally and to go to a club like Newcastle, it really felt right when the contact came in."
The appeal is obvious. Newcastle are an ambitious, upward-looking club, building aggressively in the women’s game and hungry for players who can match that trajectory. Kiernan’s own description of her style fits neatly into that picture.
"I would say I’m a quick attacker in behind, so I feel like I can bring my strengths and hopefully score loads of goal to help the team out."
Oxtoby’s new weapon
Manager Tanya Oxtoby made no secret of why she wanted Kiernan through the door.
"Leanne brings a wealth of experience from the WSL, WSL2, and her national team to our squad and has shown in all those experiences the quality that she has," Oxtoby said. "She adds versatility to the forward line, with her pace and intelligent movement making her a threat in the way we want to play. We are looking forward to what she will bring to our squad."
For a side intent on climbing the ladder, that blend of top-flight experience and Championship know-how is gold. Kiernan offers goals, yes, but also the running power and tactical intelligence to stretch defences and open lanes for others. She has led a promotion charge before. Newcastle will expect her to drive another.
A dream of playing professionally took her from Ireland to England. Now it has carried her to Tyneside, where the expectations are loud, the ambitions louder, and the margin for error small.
If Kiernan’s finishing matches her intent, Newcastle may have just signed the striker to turn their plans into something far more tangible.
