Leeds United Sign Nico Elvedi from Borussia Monchengladbach

Leeds United have landed experienced Switzerland defender Nico Elvedi from Borussia Monchengladbach in a deal worth up to £8.5m, handing Daniel Farke a commanding new presence at the heart of his back line.

The 29-year-old has signed a three-year contract at Elland Road, ending an 11-year spell in Germany where he became a cornerstone of Monchengladbach’s defence, racking up 364 appearances for the Bundesliga club.

Farke reunion seals the move

This is not just a transfer built on scouting reports and data. It is built on trust.

Elvedi will reunite with Farke, who coached Monchengladbach in the 2022-23 season and left a clear impression on the Swiss centre-back.

“He is also a big point for this change,” Elvedi admitted when asked about Farke’s role in the move. “It was just one year but I loved to have him as a manager. I learned a lot from him and I will learn a lot now.”

Leeds agreed a package with Monchengladbach worth an initial £6.8m, with a further £1.7m in add-ons to take the fee to £8.5m if all conditions are met.

International pedigree for a promotion push

Elvedi arrives with serious pedigree. He has 73 caps for Switzerland and played every minute of their run to the quarter-finals of the most recent World Cup, underlining his durability and reliability on the biggest stage.

For Leeds, still reshaping their squad for a sustained push, this is a signing aimed at tightening the spine and adding calm, top-level experience to a dressing room in transition.

He becomes Leeds’ fourth arrival of the summer window, joining goalkeeper James Trafford, winger Harry Wilson and fellow defender Tarik Muharemovic in a steadily rebuilt squad.

Knock-on effects in the squad

Elvedi’s arrival has already triggered movement elsewhere in the squad. His signing opened the door for Sebastiaan Bornauw to leave Elland Road and join Hamburg on a season-long loan, a clear signal of where Farke sees his defensive hierarchy.

There has been change at the other end of the pitch too. Earlier on Wednesday, striker Joel Piroe departed to West Ham on a season-long loan, another significant piece of business in a busy window.

Leeds now move into the new season with a Champions League-level defender at the back and a manager who already knows exactly how to use him. The question is simple: how far can that partnership take them this time?
