Liverpool Prepares New Bid for Barcola After PSG Signing
Liverpool are preparing a new bid for Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola next week, emboldened by PSG’s capture of Mika Godts and a growing belief that the Frenchman can be prised away.
The Merseyside club have been locked in long, awkward negotiations all summer as they search for another attacking weapon for Andoni Iraola’s frontline. The sticking point has been clear: PSG’s valuation. The French champions have been holding out for a fee in the region of £145m, a figure that has slowed talks and forced Liverpool to at least consider walking away.
Reports from The Athletic recently suggested Liverpool were close to shifting their gaze to alternative targets. The move for Barcola looked in danger of drifting into stalemate.
Then PSG signed Godts.
The 19-year-old arrives from Ajax on a five-year deal in a transfer that could rise to around £47m, and his arrival changes the landscape. Godts is not a squad filler. He produced 30 goal contributions in 34 Eredivisie appearances last season and walks into Paris with serious expectations attached.
For Barcola, the squeeze tightens.
He already wants out in search of regular starts, a tough ask at a club where he sits behind Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Desire Doue in the pecking order. Now Godts steps into the mix, adding yet another obstacle between Barcola and consistent minutes.
The pressure on PSG’s attacking hierarchy is obvious, and Liverpool sense their moment.
French reports claim Godts’ move will only hasten Barcola’s exit and point firmly towards Anfield as his likely destination. Liverpool are expected to test PSG’s resolve again with a fresh offer next week, this time with renewed optimism that the door will not be slammed shut.
The timing is telling. Barcola did not get on the pitch as PSG edged Aston Villa 2-1 in the UEFA Super Cup earlier this week, remaining an unused substitute while fellow summer signing Maghnes Akliouche started instead. For a player already eyeing the exit, that kind of night hardly cools the desire to move.
Arsenal, though, are still in the frame. The Gunners have long admired Barcola and remain interested in bringing him to north London. But there is a problem: price. Some reports indicate Arsenal are not prepared to go near PSG’s current demands, leaving Liverpool in a stronger position if they decide to push harder.
If Liverpool can finally drag this transfer over the line, Barcola would become the second winger to arrive at Anfield this summer, following Victor Munoz into Iraola’s evolving attack.
PSG have made their move with Godts. Now the question is whether Liverpool’s next bid is the one that finally forces Paris to let Barcola go.
