Liverpool’s Pursuit of Bradley Barcola Faces Bayern Munich Challenge
Liverpool’s pursuit of Bradley Barcola has just run into heavyweight competition – and a brutal dose of market reality.
The Paris Saint-Germain winger, identified as Liverpool’s priority wide target for this window, is now firmly on Bayern Munich’s radar as a possible successor to Michael Olise, should the German champions be forced to cash in on their own star wide man.
Liverpool’s “top, top, top” winger target
The interest from Anfield is not a whisper on the wind. On July 9, TEAMtalk’s Graeme Bailey reported that Liverpool are actively pushing to bring Barcola in this summer, with the club viewing him as a major attacking addition for Andoni Iraola’s first season in charge.
Barcola has already told PSG he wants to leave. That is a significant step. The French champions, though, are not behaving like a club ready to accept defeat. They want to keep the France international, are prepared to open talks over a new contract, and have placed an enormous price tag on his head.
Inside Paris, the number being floated is at least €150m (£128m, $170.5m). That is the level PSG believe reflects both his current impact and his future potential. It is also the level designed to scare off all but the most determined suitors.
Fabrizio Romano has been adamant that Liverpool fall into that category. Speaking on his YouTube channel this week, he doubled down on his information that Barcola is not just one of several names, but the winger Liverpool want above all others.
Romano stressed that Barcola has been at the top of Liverpool’s list “today, yesterday, last month, two months ago, three months ago,” underlining how long the club’s recruitment team have been tracking him. Liverpool, he said, “love Barcola” and remain “super keen” on the player, even if the financial side of any deal is far from straightforward.
Barcelona, Romano added, are not part of this story, with Jorge Mendes not involved as Barcola’s agent.
Bayern move into position
Just as Liverpool’s interest seemed clear and uncontested, Bayern Munich have stepped into the frame.
The German giants are fighting to keep Michael Olise, but Real Madrid have made the winger a major target, with club president Florentino Perez personally keen on taking him to the Bernabeu. If Bayern are backed into a corner and forced to sell, they already have a name circled in red ink.
Christian Falk of Bild, writing on his CFBayernInsider platform, reports that Barcola is on Bayern’s shortlist as a potential replacement for Olise. This is not a new crush. Falk notes that Bayern considered signing Barcola last summer and even the summer before that, viewing the now 23-year-old as a “very interesting player” for the club.
Right now, Falk is clear: there is “no chance” of Bayern landing him. The reason is the same wall Liverpool are staring at – PSG’s stance and the €150m figure being discussed if the Ligue 1 and Champions League winners decide to sell.
The situation, though, is fluid. Bayern do not want to sell Olise this summer. That is the starting point. Yet the club are already thinking about what happens if the Frenchman does not extend his contract in Munich, and how that might force their hand down the line.
Contract clocks and looming decisions
This is where the contract details start to matter. Barcola’s current deal at PSG runs to 2028 – one year shorter than Olise’s terms at Bayern.
If Barcola is not sold this summer, either to Liverpool or another club prepared to meet PSG’s valuation, the dynamic changes next year. With one year less on his deal and his desire to leave still unresolved, PSG will face a very different decision in 2025.
Falk suggests that in that scenario – Barcola still on the market, Bayern reluctantly selling Olise, and PSG under more pressure to avoid losing control of the situation – the French winger could become a far more realistic target for the Bundesliga champions.
From Bayern’s perspective, Barcola ticks several boxes. Falk describes him as a player who would “fit in perfectly” at the Allianz Arena, and not just in footballing terms. His current salary in Paris, believed to be in the €7m–8m gross range, is roughly half of what Olise earns at Bayern. For a club that still pays close attention to its wage structure, that is a powerful detail.
Liverpool’s window just got more complicated
For Liverpool, the picture is stark. They have a player who wants to leave his club, who has been their top winger target for months, and who fits the age and profile of a long-term attacking pillar.
They also have PSG demanding a fee at the very top of the market, and now Bayern Munich lurking as a serious, well-organised rival if the saga drags into next summer.
Liverpool can still try to strike now, before the field becomes even more crowded and the risk of a Bayern move grows. The alternative is to walk away from a player they clearly rate extremely highly, or to wait and hope that a more favourable opening appears down the line.
Barcola is not on the move yet. But the battle lines around him are already drawn.
