Liverpool's Pursuit of Bradley Barcola Intensifies Amid PSG's Replacements
Liverpool’s pursuit of Bradley Barcola has moved from fantasy to live possibility, with Paris Saint-Germain finally putting the pieces in place that could unlock a record-breaking transfer to Anfield.
The France international is Liverpool’s clear No 1 target for the wing this summer. Barcola has already indicated he wants the move, and there is no expectation of trouble over salary, contract length or his role in Arne Slot’s project. Everyone is aligned on that front.
The fight is over the fee.
PSG have planted their flag at a staggering €170m (£145m), a figure that would obliterate Liverpool’s own British-record outlay of £125m on Alexander Isak last summer.
Liverpool are ready to go beyond that Isak benchmark, but not all the way to PSG’s asking price. An opening bid is being put together, yet the real negotiation will be how far each side bends from their starting position.
PSG close in on Akliouche and Godts
The key condition from Paris has been clear: they will not sanction Barcola’s exit until two new wingers walk through the door.
That domino is now wobbling.
On Friday, RMC Sport’s Fabrice Hawkins reported on X that PSG are “set to sign” Monaco’s Maghnes Akliouche for €50m. The French international, who had other options, has consistently prioritised PSG and is viewed as the numerical replacement for Kang-in Lee. A medical date is still to be fixed, but the agreement between clubs is in place.
By Saturday morning, Fabrizio Romano had stamped the deal with his trademark “here we go”, adding that Akliouche will undergo his medical next week and sign a contract running until June 2031.
PSG’s rebuild on the flanks doesn’t stop there. Romano then revealed that Mika Godts has given the green light to the PSG project, with official talks under way with Ajax over a fee in the region of €60m. Godts is ready to accept personal terms if the clubs can close the gap on valuation, and there is confidence in Paris that a deal can be struck.
If Akliouche is effectively in the door and Godts is edging closer, the barrier PSG themselves erected in front of Barcola’s exit starts to weaken. Two wingers in, one high-value winger out: the logic is obvious, even for a club that rarely needs to sell.
Romano: ‘Key point is the transfer fee’
Speaking in the early hours of Saturday, Romano outlined where the Barcola negotiations currently stand between Liverpool, PSG and the player’s camp.
Contacts are ongoing. Barcola is described as “very keen” on Liverpool and “excited” by the prospect of the move. Personal terms are not expected to be an obstacle and Liverpool are fully committed to making a bid.
The sticking point, as Romano stressed, is the price.
Liverpool must decide how far they are willing to stretch for a player PSG value at €170m, especially with the French champions under no immediate pressure to cash in and still juggling their own attacking departures. Any agreement will require a “significant financial investment” from Liverpool and patience while PSG complete their incoming business.
Nothing is imminent, despite suggestions of a bid being readied. The framework is simple: Liverpool want Barcola, Barcola wants Liverpool, PSG will sell only at the right number and only once they have their replacements secured.
With Akliouche effectively wrapped up and Godts negotiations advancing, that final PSG caveat is close to being removed. What remains is the most brutal part of any modern transfer: finding a number that satisfies a club used to setting the market, and a club determined not to lose its head in it.
Liverpool have already shown they are prepared to shatter their own ceiling for Barcola. The question now is whether they are prepared to walk right up to PSG’s.
