Liverpool Intensifies Pursuit of Bradley Barcola as Salah Successor
Liverpool’s search for a successor to Mohamed Salah has zeroed in on one name: Bradley Barcola. And now the courtship is turning serious.
According to a report by the BBC, Liverpool have accelerated their interest in the Paris Saint-Germain winger and are preparing an initial bid, with Barcola identified as the club’s primary attacking target after Salah’s departure from Anfield at the end of last season.
This was not the original plan. Liverpool had first set their sights on Yan Diomande, only to see the RB Leipzig wide man slip from their grasp and head towards Real Madrid. That development has pushed Barcola to the top of Liverpool’s list and sharpened the focus on a deal that was already complicated.
A £145m problem
The obstacle is brutal and simple: money. PSG have placed a huge valuation of around £145 million on Barcola, a figure that would smash the British transfer record and test even Liverpool’s newfound financial muscle.
Inside Anfield, there is a clear desire to drive that number down towards the £100m mark. PSG, for now, are unmoved. The French champions are standing firm, convinced of the 23-year-old’s value and under no pressure to sell with two years remaining on a contract that runs until 2028.
That gap – roughly £45m of it – is where this transfer will be won or lost.
A player pushing for Anfield
What Liverpool do have is the player’s will. Barcola is understood to be keen on a move to Merseyside, eager to take what he views as the next decisive step of his career and test himself in the Premier League.
His situation in Paris has soured. After slipping down the pecking order and spending too many big nights watching from the bench, the France winger wants more than cameo roles. He wants to start, to be central, to carry responsibility.
That desire has already led to action. Barcola recently held positive talks with Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola and senior club executives, discussions that mapped out how he would fit into the project and what his role could look like in a post-Salah attack. Crucially, he has made it clear he does not intend to extend his current deal with PSG.
An agreement in principle between Barcola and Liverpool is in place, according to the report, giving the Premier League side a powerful card to play. No formal contract has been signed, but the intent is there – and it runs in only one direction.
Negotiations on a knife-edge
The deal itself remains a complex operation. Liverpool must now turn personal agreement into club-to-club compromise, a far tougher task when the selling club are one of Europe’s financial heavyweights and feel no urgency to cash in.
The plan at Anfield is to submit an official opening bid in the coming days, a first test of PSG’s resolve and a marker of how far Liverpool are prepared to go. From there, the talks will become a tug of war: PSG clinging to their £145m stance, Liverpool pushing for a figure closer to £100m, both sides aware that the player’s preference tilts the table slightly towards England.
Barcola’s wish to relocate to Merseyside gives Liverpool a distinct advantage, but not a decisive one. PSG can still refuse to bend. Liverpool can still walk away.
For now, the 23-year-old is banking on his personal agreement with the Reds to nudge the process forward and force a breakthrough. If that doesn’t happen, and if the stand-off over the fee drags on without movement, Liverpool may be forced to turn their gaze elsewhere and rip up the latest plan to replace Salah.
The next bid will tell Liverpool’s story: how badly they want Barcola, and how far they are willing to go to make him the new face of their forward line.
