Liverpool’s pursuit of Bradley Barcola is gathering real momentum – and Bayern Munich know they’re already beaten to the punch.
The Premier League club have made no secret of their need for a marquee wide forward after Mohamed Salah’s departure at the end of last season. Victor Munoz has arrived from Osasuna, a smart piece of business and a nod to the future, but inside Anfield there has always been an acceptance that one more heavyweight attacking signing had to follow.
For weeks, that player was expected to be RB Leipzig’s Yan Diomande. Liverpool even went as far as submitting a bid, only to watch the Ivorian slip towards Real Madrid. When that door closed, another opened in Paris.
Barcola keen, Liverpool convinced – but PSG hold the key
Bradley Barcola has emerged as the new primary target, and crucially, the feeling is mutual.
Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano outlined the state of play on Friday, making it clear that Liverpool, Paris Saint-Germain and the player’s camp remain in regular contact. The sticking point is not the project, the role, or the money on Barcola’s side.
It’s the fee.
Romano stressed that Liverpool do not expect any issues with personal terms. Barcola is described as “very keen” on the move and “excited” by the prospect of joining the Reds. The vision has been sold. The player is on board.
The negotiations now hinge on how far Liverpool are prepared to go to tempt PSG into doing business. The French champions have already seen several attacking options depart and are still working through other deals. They want time, and they want to be protected.
Liverpool, Romano says, will bid. They want Barcola, and they are confident an agreement with the player will follow. The real battle lies with PSG’s valuation and the timing of their own recruitment. Until the champions of France line up replacements and soften their stance, no agreement is close.
Nothing is described as “imminent”. Talk of a bid being “prepared” is secondary to the core problem: the size of the cheque required to make PSG blink.
Bayern watching – but not competing
In the background, Bayern Munich have been hovering, tracking Barcola’s situation without ever stepping fully into the ring.
According to Sport Bild journalist Christian Falk, Bayern have monitored the winger for the past two summers and remained in touch with his representatives. Barcola, 23, sits firmly on their shortlist and the German club even checked in again this summer to gauge his feelings about the future, with his PSG contract running until 2028 and no extension talks currently active.
That lack of renewal makes Barcola a depreciating asset in theory – “cheaper and cheaper every year,” as Falk puts it – but not cheap enough for Bayern right now.
For the Bundesliga giants, the price this summer is simply too high. For Liverpool, it is painful but possible.
Falk is clear: Liverpool are “closer” to the deal. With Diomande bound for Real Madrid, the need at Anfield is acute. A left-sided winger of Barcola’s profile now feels less like a luxury and more like a necessity.
Bayern, by contrast, can afford to think a year ahead. Their long-term wide plans are tied to Michael Olise. The Frenchman is staying put this summer, yet his future beyond that remains open. If Olise does not sign a new contract and Bayern eventually decide – or are forced – to sell, Barcola is viewed as the number one replacement option.
That’s the Bavarian calculation: wait, reassess next summer, and if Barcola is still at PSG, move aggressively then.
But there is a catch, and Falk spells it out. If Liverpool strike now and bring Barcola to Anfield, Bayern’s scenario collapses. “There’s no chance for Bayern,” he notes, if the winger chooses the Reds this summer.
So the picture is clear. PSG hold the cards, Liverpool are ready to pay to see them, and Bayern can only watch from the rail, hoping the hand doesn’t get played just yet.
